one of my biggest regrets is not trying to become a model. im a hag in my mid twenties now. just bury me in my grave. i was a FOOL who wanted “to be valued for my brains not my looks” when it doesn’t matter what you do or how you dress or talk. you will only be valued for your looks first and formost. so I might as well get a check.

for modeling or acting maybe; but there’s many other ways to cash in on good looks; emcee, host, in person sales, public relations, most management positions (ie any position where people have to interact with you beyond introduction and goodbyes) comes to mind.

yeah, there are a lot of benefits, pretty privilege is real. the down side is all the stalking and harassment and racism. to being seen I mean. its great for organizing, everyone wants to talk to you. people tell me I should run for office all the time lol all the while im saying communist stuff (i know they wouldnt listen is i wasnt attractive, ive been unattractive). also theres the gender stuff. so inconvenient, getting in between me and being a hot girl. but yeah it has up and downs but one day ill no longer be valued for my looks and the only thing that makes people be nice to me will go away.

there isn’t a job that’s “just being hot” and i know i’m annoying for pointing this out but we should stop falling for this reactionary bit even as a joke.

I got to visit the Target and BestBuy HQ in Minneapolis for a multimedia class. We hung out with their marketing, multimedia and business relations departments. They were all structured the same way, male young to middle aged dweebs reporting to the most attractive Scandinavian women you could imagine. I swear the qualifications for executive, director, and senior roles were blonde, skinny and hot.

being hot is a lot of work if you’re trying to fit the Western patriarchal beauty standards tho. have you ever tried to follow a model or famous actor’s fitness plan? it’s so hard and time consuming. i’m not saying being conventionally attractive can’t make things easier* but we shouldn’t pretend like there isn’t work being done. even shit like being an influencer or sex work takes a lot of marketing work and editing your content and stuff. i just feel like going it’s not that hard to go from being “being hot isn’t work” to saying a lot of the forms of labor service industry people end up doing isn’t work so we’re potential ceding ground to the reactionaries there.

*it can also make things harder even professionally, plenty of attractive women get passed over for promotions bc their sexist boss thinks they’re a “dumb blonde” or whatever

All those plans are nonsense and not what the actors or models actually do. Sure they put in a ton of effort into exercise and diet, but not by following their puff piece article on men’s health or whatever. The actual mechanics of dieting and exercise are very simple and won’t sell any magazines, which is why they make up nonsense fitness plans to write articles about.

yeah i know, i’m talking about the actual work they put in.

edit: i’ll make my example more clear. a lot of NFL teams have strict workout plans they put their cheerleaders on. those workout plans are unpaid labor they have to do to keep their job since these people aren’t being paid to go to the gym, correct? also NFL teams got busted not paying cheerleaders for mandatory attendance at promotional events like car dealership openings or whatever bc “standing around looking hot isn’t work.”

I’m describing people with corporate leadership roles in two huge retailers. These people are the least productive of the entire professional managerial class. They don’t even send 8 emails a day, they sit in meetings and take notes about those emails then send it off to the decision makers. Sometimes they have to do the uncomfortable task of breaking bad news to their subordinates.

    Well it aint just that.

My partner is extremely conventionally attractive. She has done modeling, sex work, etc. Nothing ever pans out because of her mental issues preventing her from basically being able to function in a basic way. Like very often shows up 6-12 hours late to events due to extreme ADD and OCD.

Her being dummy hot has a lot of negatives. She is constantly targeted at any event by any number of weirdos. She is shouted at all of the time by people in random places. She rarely goes to a gas station and isnt cat called or harassed by some guy. Its fucking absurd. Hell ive had people tell me to fuck off from her cause im kinda an unassuming guy and people dont realpy believe shes at a function with me, and they tryna slide.

For her its been kinda bad. She has had a lot of bad experience being targeted, especially since she is a very particular kind of attractive that well, gets a lot of attention from weirdos (tall, blonde, skinny, blue eyes, very european) you get the idea.

She cant even do onlyfans cause shes so scatterbrained that she cant keep up with it. She has body dysmorphia due to being objectified a ludicrous amount.

I love her tho. Shes one of the most honest and loving people i have ever met.

Sorry if this post is kind of weird, but its hard out here for everyone. Everyone has struggles.

It was even wilder to me when I didn’t yet know/understand I am flag-aroace-pride, at least now I know most people experience… something when they look at attractive people? And want to look at them more? Idk I still don’t get it ig

Not really - very rarely I do experience aesthetic attraction, but fleeting. And aesthetic attraction is just that, aesthetic, like looking at a great painting. “oh neat… anywho”

That’s partly allonormativity, but it was confusing to me at first, too! I experience no sexual or romantic attraction to people. Never wanted to kiss someone, never thought of wanting to ask someone out on a date. Always seen attractiveness on an ‘objective’ scale - I know what is conventionally attractive, and so I can deduce it logically, but I don’t feel anything for it. At the same time I enjoy the fantasy of “a cute guy” acting flustered, being all embarassed meow-melt, but when I say ‘fantasy’ I don’t think of an actual person, it’s always this thought form of ‘twink with fluffy brown hair’ but he has no face. I like BL manga, too, where these cute scenarios often feature.

Until I came across microlabels and spoke with other aroace people, as well as understood attraction and its place in society, I had trouble placing this disconnect of not feeling attraction yet liking gay romance stories.
