This is a sad accident. Always remember the basic rules to firearms safety.

    1. Treat all guns as if they are always loaded.

    2. Never let the muzzle point at anything that you are not willing to destroy.

    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot.

    4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

99% of all gun accidents can be prevented by following these four basic rules.

Or, you know, maybe the kid shouldn’t have had a firearm. He clearly had no respect for them.

My knee jerk reaction is “what a fucking idiot”, but this is fuckin sad. He didn’t survive his edgy phase. Never lived long enough to figure it out.

We’re all idiots—at least at that age—but most of us don’t end up dead because of our idiocy. :'(

      Ugh. So senseless and tragic.

He should have received training on how to handle a firearm if one was in the house, regardless of whether he was supposed to have it at that time or not. Everyone in the house needs firearms training, including children. Children should be allowed to frequently handle the firearm under supervision until it is no longer mysterious or taboo for them. It’s a tragedy what happened to him, but he was old enough to know better. Unfortunately it seems that nobody ever taught him how to respect and handle firearms.

Should he have known better, sure. But even with training, he should not have had access to a firearm unsupervised. Someone failed this young man and at the end of the day, saying shit like “idiot” and “Darwin Award winner” to a child killing himself is fucking abhorrent.

Yeah, I hate taking a celebratory tone about this, or treating it like it’s something we can just laugh about endlessly…

But I do take issue with calling seventeen year olds children. They’re a year away from being able to legally vote, and it is the case that we would all think it was a draconian law if a nineteen year old was put in jail for sleeping with his seventeen year old girlfriend he had a long-term relationship with…

Yet, the nineteen year old is an adult.

… And let me also say he should have known better on some basic level as well.

Like the guys who are just nonchalantly walking on dangerous ledges…

My guess is that the guy regularly handled the gun while it was loaded and so the weight difference between loaded/unloaded never really registered to him, and he felt he could just mess around haphazardly with the gun whenever and, just without thought… Bam.

It’s tragic, but it’s also like walking on dangerous ledges regularly to show off. I hate that it happened, but I understand why it happened, and I feel that the person involved knew wht was up to some degree, but tried to gain recognition by ignoring the dangers and showing off.

Seventeen year old people are children. They are minors. They are still in high school. They have, in most cases, not lived one single day of being an adult with all of the responsibilities and privileges that that comes along with. Even when you are 18 years old, you are still immature because your brain will not be fully formed until 25 years of age. There are Juliet laws yes, so that teenagers can be in a legal relationship with other teenagers and it’s irrelevant.

And honestly for the record, 19 year old people are also basically children to me, but that’s not what the law says.

If my grandma made this impassioned argument about how your brain isn’t fully formed until 25 so the drinking age should be 25, sex education shouldn’t exist, and everyone should be living in black & white, making their beds dutifully immediately after rising in the morning, putting on pajamas, saying the Lord’s prayer kneeling at the side of their single bed, etc., I would be sympathetic…

But your username is VelociCatTurd. Now, I may be jumping to conclusions… But… I think if you heard that seventeen year olds were smoking pot and sleeping with each other, you’d say “of course.” I think you’d probably also support secret abortions for seventeen year olds. I think you’d support having the school nurse be equipped with condoms to give out to teenagers for free to reduce STDs…

                Am I right?

Or am I talking to my grandmother right now…?

Because, if I am talking to a boomer Christian who is very emotional about these things and every seventeen year old is a child who needs to be handheld by their parents until they are old enough to walk down the aisle with their similarly reared future husband/wife… I will respect your consistency.

If not, I feel like you should come clean and tell us about how children can smoke pot, sleep with each other, and watch pr0n… (Because I ASSUME you would not be horrified that seventeen year olds do that…)… But there’s another class of children who can’t (because I ASSUME you would be very uncool with seven year olds doing that).

What the fuck are you rambling about? All I’m saying is that it’s fucked up calling a kid killing himself an idiot and shit. That’s my piece. If you think that okay, then you’re a fucked up individual. That’s it.

… No, they’re teenagers. Yes their brain hasn’t finished developing, yes they’re not as mature as someone older, yes they haven’t lived as a thirty year old, but no they’re not children. They’re teenagers. What a stupid fucking hill you’ve chosen.

True, but you can operate a vehicle, which could very much be deadly, at this age in US. You shoud have some common sense.

If guns in the household actually made people safer, having a gun would lower your insurance rates.

    But it doesn’t.

I know people who are anti-gun that admit they would get a gun if they lived in certain neighborhoods, though.

      It’s very relative.

No gun in the house in small town Wisconsin versus no gun in the house in O Block are very different things, lol.

It’s easy to think so based on purely emotional first glance, but I bet the data still shows it’s not true.
