They are brainwashed. I got a cold for the 2nd time this season. My dad: well you shouldn’t have gotten the flu shot. My response in front of the whole family: I thought you didn’t go to college let alone medical school. How did you have the time with all the television you watch?

Indeed. I’ve been trying to push them away from watching so much Fox News and actually picking up a book on these topics. I’ve seen the stuff they watch, and it’s all garbage. Of course they are going to think crazy things if everything they are consuming is crazy.

It’s a real shame. I can’t completely separate from these people, but I’ve lost friends over such ridiculous claims. It’s a shame.

The Allies forced the German civilians to dig graves for the concentration camps so they could see the inhumanity their complacency and tacit approval caused. I’ve never appreciated my history classes more and I’m terribly sorry for the schools and children that are performing historical revisionism to well documented events.

Also, I went to the gatewaypundit site TFG linked to and read some comments. One commenter suggesting someone who disagreed commit suicide (and of course they knew how to bypass filters, so it’s a tactic they use often). Folks are still suggesting the election was stolen then with the same breath saying to circle the ballot processing centers and not let vans through. The cognitive dissonance for these self-titled “critical thinkers” is beyond scary.

Edit: wanted to fact check my memory, here’s a photo.

And, the overwhelmingly dominant reaction the German civilians had in the destruction that was the aftermath of the war, was self-pity and resentment towards their enemies (“how could the allies be so cruel to us, we didn’t do anything”). In fairness, their conditions were very hard (starvation, disease, prostitution, desperation) but there was effectively no recognition at all of any responsibility on the German side for what was “happening to them”. Germany 1945 goes into a lot of the harrowing details and the German people’s reaction to them.

TL;DR get ready for the Trump rank-and-file to never acknowledge responsibility for anything, no matter how badly it plays out.

At my US high school we spent two days in mandatory silence walking around the classroom viewing these types of Holocaust pictures and reading descriptions of the images.

We spent the rest of the lesson arc discussing and unpacking the atrocities and horror of radicalization, hatred, ignorance, and war as a group. It was a surreal experience.

We had a similar experience in US history with slavery and the Civil Rights movement.

One of my grandfather’s was Red Cloud. I have lost count of how many times I have asked people, almost always when they are talking about US History, if they know who he was and they don’t.

Red Cloud was the only native chief/general to combine multiple tribes into an army. He is also the only guy to force the US Army to surrender.

Dude was probably one of the most bad ass warriors to ever be born in the Americas but rarely do people know who he is. They know Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse but rarely do they know Red Cloud.

My mother was the first one born outside of the traditional territory or reservation. My older cousins tell stories about how their grandmother (my mother’s grandmother) was a child during that age. She was on her mother’s back when they went looking for survivors of the Wounded Knee massacre. How she remembers sitting on Red Cloud’s lap and making him laugh.

There’s much more painful stuff so those good stories are like medicine. Reminders that even in darkness there’s a little light.

Red Cloud would be five generations away from me.

Important point here is the Allies didn’t select for German civilians who supported the Nazis, they ALL shared blame for it even if they were just doing what they could to survive under the circumstances. Keep that in mind if you’re a Democrat voter and think you’ve “done your duty” or whatever. Saying you hate Trump online doesn’t matter for anything and the only Germans who had any respect after WW2 likely died in the resistance or in camps. So the moral posturing within the very political system that’s causing this by which you asset superiority because you are anti-Trump, at the end of the day it has zero significance if it doesn’t work. Given Trump’s polling numbers I wouldn’t be so sure of my effectiveness if I were a US Democrat supporter right now and feel like I had no basis to assert that “I’m on the good side.”

Fortunately for us there is a very clear geographic split between where most Trump supporters live vs where most of the rest of us live. Demographers can and have focused it down to the postal code level, which is just to say that it’s far more granular than simply red vs blue states.

Not really that simple, the fact that the 13% Obama-Trump voters likely secured his victory is one major complication with these typical “MAGA yokel” interpretations of who Trump’s supporters are. Also the alt-right people who supported Trump in 2016 don’t necessarily support him personally anymore but will still not be voting Democrat, mostly because he governed like a milquetoast Republican and wasn’t the anti-establishment personality they wanted. Similar to Obama actually, at the end of the day he was an American president and did what they do. The idea there are strong racial lines (as if that was a valid identifier for people anyway) is also dubious as many voters in the “hispanic” category are strong supporters of Trump, his number of black supporters isn’t insignificant either.

This also misses the point that Democrat supporters are part of the same political system by which MAGA exists in, it’s all one economic consensus that is leading to this, so everyone would be blamed for acting within this system and they would deserve it. At least in this hypothetical Nazi Germany endgame fantasy.

These media outlets basically created Trump’s brand, and “bOtH siDeS” absolutely because it wasn’t conservative news media clips the alt-right were gleefully consuming in 2016, it was compilations of liberal news anchors with “shocked” expressions reciting the latest Trump tweets. Can’t believe it’s still happening but we’re back to Trump outrage news cycles and online reactions to it just like 2016.

Damn. CNN had a similar change relating to new leadership. If not to damage CNN and other traditional news sources, what are they even trying to accomplish? It’s not like conservatives are coming back to replace the progressive viewers who were pushed away. The result is less revenue for CNN; less revenue for NYT…

But maybe that’s the point like with Twitter. They “invest” the purchase price so they can kill the network or ruin its credibility to remove the contrast between the nonsense on Fox, OAN, etc and previously respected organizations.

Plus all the local news stations are being quietly bought by larger organizations with the same intentions if not worse.

Good faith journalism has been experiencing a hostile takeover, and it’s speeding up.

So yes. The escalation to our current level of battshittery is relatively new. Previous answers would have been things like border security, trade deficit, etc. – still stupid but not in the ballpark of where we are today.

I have some great ideas: improve education, reduce inequality, introduce preferential voting.

Seriously though, these problems are occuring the world over. I’m not an anthropologist but IMO the root cause is income inequality. Basically the working class are increasingly dissatisfied and the frustration manifests in very strange ways. There’s no fix for this other than societal collapse as a result of economic, environmental, or societal unrest. This part of the cycle will probably take 300 years or so, depending on the whole climate change thing.

The only way out of this political era has to come from outside this structure of politics, because the two parties in the US consent to the same economic arrangement that causes this problem. MAGA and Trump are a reaction to economic conditions that neither party is going to change, and actually rely on not changing.

Given the apparently compounding rates of long COVID in subsequent reinfections, this is a problem that will take care of itself.

Fun fact: Civil War is actually very difficult to participate in if you get winded going up a flight of stairs and have a constant mental fog.

You vote: vote every time, every election, from local to federal level. Every time. It’s easy to be cynical about it, throw hands up and say, “nothing I do makes any difference - why bother,” but it matters. The last few elections have made it plain as day that these battles are coming down to small numbers of votes so they all count.

The word cloud had been published by The Daily Mail, which said it had polled 1,000 likely voters, asking them to describe in one word what President Joe Biden and Trump each want from a second term.

I believe Cheeto Mussolini should be in prison, but they asked voters what they think that Biden/Trump would want from another term.

Honestly, after having Trump in office for 4 years, Biden’s milquetoast term has been refreshing. It’s nice to wake up every morning and not have to read about the president of the United States beefing with a 12 year old girl on Twitter overnight for the third time in a month.

Biden is boring. But I’m tired of living through what will inevitably be several chapters in future World History textbooks; I could use some more “boring” in politics, because “boring” is stable and predictable.

          milquetoast

          boring

While I agree, the general perception is that Biden is boring. He (and democrats in general) is really really bad at championing his own successes. Biden has accomplished a lot, but he has done it without fanfare or news coverage.

Meanwhile, Trump couldn’t even fart without the media turning it into front page news. Because the media quickly realized that Trump headlines sell views, but Biden headlines don’t. So Biden doesn’t get the same kind of 24/7 media barrage that Trump got. And that makes Biden seem hilariously boring in comparison. When you aren’t constantly waking up to news of how the president almost started a major international scandal due to a tweet he sent at 3AM, things seem pretty chill.

Yup. Trump’s been blithely called America’s “reality TV president” but it’s nonetheless true. Right-wing voters want to be entertained far more than they want effective government.

Because to them, Trump’s failure to govern is also the point, so it’s doubly positive - someone entertaining swinging a sledgehammer to all of those “liberal” safety nets, institutions. They’d prefer government simply cease to exist. (Until at least it’s their house that’s burning down and needs the fire department; or their roads that are falling apart.)

Right, there is a fairly large body of philosophy which asks the question “when is violence justified?” and a big part of that is “don’t throw away lives recklessly for no purpose.” It doesn’t matter how “right” Hamas is, there is no realistic path by which violence can possibly achieve their goal of liberation. Their view of the world is warped by their religious views which hold that a god will intervene on their behalf if they martyr themselves piously. This is quite simply delusional and colors their role in justice seeking in a way many people refuse to acknowledge.

There is a simple path to ending this conflict, but it routes through a form of secularism which is not currently possible.

They tried to prosecute him. In MAGA world, that demands an escalation in kind to attack (“defend”) against the prosecution; the truth or falsehood of the accusation doesn’t matter. They also think Biden stole the election, although as before, they don’t really care in an objective sense whether that’s actually factually true. They believe it wholeheartedly and that’s all they care about.

There’s also a fiction that “they” are trying to put kitty litter in your classrooms and tell your kids to pretend to be cats and pee in the litterbox, or allow transgender people into women’s bathrooms because someone “became transgender” for that exact purpose, or other weird and outlandish things, but I don’t think those are really getting traction as much as they’d like them to. I think it’s mainly a standard sociopath pattern of “I did an illegal thing” -> “You’re reacting as if it’s illegal” -> “My god how could you make that wild accusation and be an enemy to me” -> “I attack you”.

We live in a state, “the state” is a tool specifically designed to prevent the people from exacting consequences on the those in charge of it – “the state” is a self-defense mechanism of those that claim authority.

State: A polity claiming exclusive authority on allowed violence in a claimed territory.

Revenge for the impeachments and the various investigations and prosecutions. Also revenge against anyone in his administration who has spoken out against him. So people like Liz Cheney. Adam Kinzinger, Jack Smith, Merritt Garland, Biden and his son, Bill Barr, John Kelly, Mark Milley, any prominent figure who has publicly insulted him. The smart money is that a long list already exists.

When Trump got elected in 2016 I thought, “Okay, now that we’ve done this everyone will see what a farce it is and never let it happen again.”

But that didn’t happen. It got worse. These kinds of people got their inch and now they’re in it for the mile. This is a “keeps getting worse” scenario unless we kneecap it now.

Same. I remember waking into my local bodega in 2016 and seeing that buffoon’s face next to giant type screaming “HE WON!! WOW!!”… First I was like, well he’s also lived in NYC, I know he hired undocumented people for some projects. He can’t get as crazy as his campaign… Right?

Then NYC had to stop ICE from posting up near our courthouses and police stations, trying to prey on people actively working with the legal system for help or to voluntarily answer for crime or mistakes.

"These jurisdictions have caused immeasurable harm to the American people and to the very fabric of our Republic.” he said, and tried to withhold federal funds from our cities.

We all shrugged at his impotent executive order, both because of how much money and self sufficiency we all provide each other. But he was always banging on our door, to steal neighbors and friends out of our communities, whether they had federal permission to be here or not.

Are we lawless for disregarding the law a bit? Maybe. But are we human-centric for giving people the chance to do right, to live and contribute to the American dream?

You decide, both I and my old city already have.
