Death Stranding, got it free off of Epic. I know people either love it or hate it. I definitely love it! I’ll probably finish it which is definitely a rarity for me and video games!

I’ve been on a big boomer shooter kick lately. I’m mainly working on the last couple expansions for the original Quake, but I’m also chipping away at the first Serious Sam and Postal Brain Damaged.

Man, the new 40K boomer shooter, BOLTGUN, is crazy good - strong recommend if you haven’t checked it out already. :)

I’m continuing my Capcom kick, and playing SF6, Monster Hunter, and Dragons Dogma.

I swear, capcom is killing it so hard right now - these are some of the beat, most forward design thinking actions games ever made, and I am having such a blast. SF6 has made such intense strides forward in terms of what mechanics are available. Also, a bunch of enthusiasts have also been able to revive dragons dogma online and get a public server going. Capcom has pretty much become my favorite large game publisher, better than Nintendo.

Playing Cyberpunk 2077, got to the Panam missions and it’s starting to feel really fun. I think the character side quest chains are the best part of the game.

I played Zelda TOTK for like an hour and haven’t gone back to it. I dunno why since it was so hyped, it just didn’t blow me away…

Thinking of starting either Alyx, Xenoblade X or 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Almost spoiled for choice really.

I think you have to temper your expectations for Zelda games since the fanbase loves hyperbole. Personally, I do think they are great games, but Nintendo hasn’t really improved the formula since A Link to the Past, and that one is thirty years old now.

BOTW made such huge changes to the Zelda formula though! Why do you say that?

Truthfully, I haven’t played BotW, so I don’t really know how it stacks up to ALttP, but I’m a tired, old curmudgeon, so I can’t see it being more enjoyable. ALttP is just such a concise, well-designed game without an inch of wasted space. At a cursory glance, BotW looks like it suffers from open world bloat and performance issues.

If you’re thinking it’s one of those “walk around to the next dot on the map” / “collectathon” type games, it’s definitely not. BotW was praised for changing the stale open world formula so that the world and exploring the world IS the game, and it’s extremely fun. You never know what you’re going to find. IMO, it captures a lot of the charm of what makes Zelda great. The world is big but none of it is wasted or generic. It’s well designed. You probably won’t like the dungeons though :)

I replayed LttP last year and I think it holds up pretty well for how old it is.

I do like TotK, but it’s just not what I’m looking for in a game right now. Also because I should get a different controller. Playing on the regular Switch controllers sucks.

I just tried the demo today. Good thing there is a demo, it is “not my bag”. There’s a lot that’s cool about it: style, story, art, but the central gameplay loop of 4v4 card slots isn’t my thing. I’m going to play out the demo to be sure, but I’ll probably keep looking.

Playing a combination of Trails in the Sky: SC on Steam Deck, and Path of Exile on my PC.

Path of Exile is pretty good for a free game for sure, but I don’t like the sound of the endgame. I’m not there yet, but apparently you can potentially lose hours of progress via a single death. I’ll probably get to the end of the story and call it quits. Still, worth the $0.

Trails in the Sky: SC has me frustrated. JRPGs used to be my favorite genre, but I generally don’t like the direction they’ve taken since the end of the PSX era. This one kind of sits somewhere between the things I love, and the things I hate. There were about 50 hours of preamble before it got to the good stuff. I almost quit more than once in that time. I am glad I stuck with it, because it did get really good, but 50 hours to get there is a huge ask. Also, I really had to check my completionist tendencies at the title screen. 100%ing it either requires meticulously following a guide, or spending ~200 hours with it scouring every single NPC for hidden quests or dialog between every single story beat. No thank you. Thankfully, most of it is entirely optional, provided you don’t mind not getting the best armor or weapons in the game: something I’d normally want to do.

I have tried to play Trails FC on Vita a couple of times and not got into it. I am sure it’s amazing but it’s one of those cases where the internet hypes it a lot, but that doesn’t mean everyone is going to like it. I am one of those people who talks to every NPC in the town so I thought I’d love it, but the beginning is slow, and the grid-based combat is pretty slow too. It doesn’t help that I’m 37 and kind of past playing 50 hours of a game I don’t like.

Idk abou the vita version, but on the PC version there is a button that makes the game run faster. I pretty much have it held down all the time, and it makes the game a lot more playable.

I actually appreciate the slow, methodical nature of JRPGs, but I am glad that the developers recognize that as time goes on the repetitive nature of them really wears on more modern players. But that has been a pretty consistent movement in JRPGs to automate and speed up gameplay. It’s an interesting meta for fans of the genre.

My experience with the trails games is that Falcom puts the huge replay the game final level in them. It’s even worse in the third chapter, but it is par for the course for Japanese game design of that era. I’m hoping the cross bell arc shakes out a little bit differently.

Yeah, I’m finishing up SC right now, and never mind I’m going into grave peril to save the country, I forgot to save someone’s missing cat in chapter 3, so no, the bracer guild will not be giving me that shiny set of the best armor in the game they have lying around.

The combat has been improved in ME1 if that helps. The combat HUD is redesigned to be similar to ME3. Getting into cover during combat is easier, although getting into cover on accident when you want to run past something also happens a lot. Lots of cooldowns have been reduced.

Bunch of QoL added as well. Sprinting on the Citadel, mark gear as junk for quick sell, sorting your inventory.

Exalted March on YouTube does an incredible job talking about the 3 games in the LE. The title is certainly click baity, but he explains out the gate that he’s not trashing ME2, he loves ME2, he’s just trying to point out how great ME1 and 3 are and comparing them together again with the LE release. I think he pulls it off very well.

BL and TTWL all play very similar. I haven’t reached end game yet in TTWL, but so far the story is fun and amusing. The great writing is there, the core mechanics of all the other games are still there with more of a fantasy vibe thrown in (but it’s still a shooter, with explosions).

A few specifics differences is how the class system works. It seemed a bit more limited at first, but I think it works super well. You pick a class and you only get 1 skill tree, but at a certain part of the game you multi class and you pick any of the other classes to combine with. So you end up with only 2 skill trees, when normally you’d get 3 in the other games, but honestly most of the builds I’d run in the other games only ended up using 2 of the 3 skill trees anyway so it works out pretty well.

Since it’s a tabletop RPG setting, you also have a lot more flexibility in creating your character. The downside is that you are always refered to as “Hero” or “The Player” instead of a name.

Really enjoying it so far. I hope the end game holds up just as well because I really like farming for awesome items and taking on all the challenges, raid bosses, etc.
