Not sure why this gets posted as some kind of own.

The only reasonable response from most Americans would be to give the FBI more power to intervene in these things before they happen

EDIT: based on the responses from the good posters below me, I’m obviously not communicating well. I’m saying that repeating this line “they were on an FBI watch list” is just manufacturing consent to give the FBI more power to intervene preemptively. I’m not saying OP is participating in it, but this phrase keeps getting repeated in the news.

I said reasonable Americans. This was stupid. I only meant it seems reasonable to most Americans to give the FBI more power to stop these things before they happen. OBVIOUSLY, I think it’s a stupid idea.

News story: The police knew about the pedophile ring being run in the house, but they were unable to act because of restrictive warrant laws. This is the 18th time we’ve reported on this phenomenon this month. If ONLY there were a way to prevent these things from happening in the future.

This has been happening since the 20th century and nothing has changed regarding feds’ powers as a consequence. The only thing we get is more cops in schools, but that’s not really relevant here. And even then, having a cop or two in school is a pretty poor event to policy ratio in the span of like 120+ years. Even in conservative states, literally all they do is propose more guns in school. They don’t care enough to propose more powers for cops, just more vague funding and power that they were already going to receive regardless.

The thing is that Americans are already demanding more police powers and funding them and this still happens. The FBI gets powers no matter what anyone says because unlike cops, they don’t need the extra responsibility of putting on a show for the community; they just do whatever they want. But nobody in the government cares about school shootings, not even using it as a trojan horse.

It seems like a nihilistic, end of history version of a strategy of tension where the government encourages and/or allows and/or fails to stop stochastic terrorism, but ultimately no one cares about any of events to even take advantage. White children were massacred by a neurodivergent gunman during Obama, and… nothing happened afterwards. No heavy handed gun laws, no extra policing or surveillance that wasn’t already planned beforehand. This modern strategy of tension doesn’t produce fear and compliance, it just produces apathy.

Why would they care when the government is just a capitalist sibling rivalry rather than being in an existential war between opposite ideologies like the Years of Lead?
