Deprogram subreddit seems to lack proper moderation, radlibs are moderated from the obvious radlib shit, but were shoehorned in the “leftist infighting” big tent, fringe safety valves like zizek, religious apologia and of course bothsiding Ukraine war. There’s a lot of based people too, but entire sub is in permanent genzedong struggle session.

I’m gonna say something that may be unpopular here, but the liberalism in that subreddit is a symptom of the flirting with liberalism that the Deprogram trio themselves do. They have cultivated an audience that is very mixed because their takes are inconsistent. Particularly on the Ukraine conflict they have refused to take an unequivocally pro-Russian stance and have fed into liberal misconceptions about the conflict by having dubious guests comment on it, proposing incorrect explanations for the causes of the conflict, and generally focusing too much on the contradictions of the Russian Federation instead of identifying the primary contradiction which is the struggle against fascism and imperialism. And they are continuing to associate with and defend extremely problematic figures like Hasan Piker, who also has cultivated an audience in which absolutely atrocious takes on the Ukraine conflict (and many other topics) are ubiquitous. Imo the Deprogram trio themselves need to be held a little more responsible for the poor quality of their subreddit.

Idk if here, but that would surely be unpopular on that subreddit :)

I agree though, and criticizing anything about the trio there is causing considerable anger.

I agree, the hosts feel like they aren’t really continuing their own socialist education, and are quite possibly even actively going backwards (it feels like Yugopnik has gotten a lot more reactionary sounding over time.) I love their banter, but they have really ceased to be a proper “socialist” podcast for me and have become another “3 guys talking about whatever” podcast with a socialist bent.

I’m worried they’re too concerned with the social media aspect of it, trying to remain “popular” to reach more people, but in doing so, have actively turned away from “unpalatable” messages, which can easily lead their audience of baby leftists astray. I would’ve recommended the podcast to people just learning about socialism a year or so ago, but these days I’d be worried it would do more harm than good.

Same. I myself stopped listening sometime last year when the podcast became too repetitive and too shallow, and although i check in every now and then to see what the new episodes are about i have not seen any change for the better.

that sub usually has at least one or two “is Russia imperialist? I’m just asking questions!” posts a week. I wish they would ban those people
