    He said they were not allegorical, he wanted the reader to relate to the wide themes of human experience and not to some specific narrow event to be fixed on that moment in time. aka, people read the one ring as an allegory of the atomic bomb, which he hated, it was suppose to be read as a symbol of the corrupting influence of power on people.
