The on demand chunk loading system for minecarts was really impressive. Complex to build, but it might actually provide use for long range rail systems in vanilla.
A combination of item filters based on more named paper and some redstone logic could seem to do that. You could probably even do something that checks for x no or diamonds in the request before responding and have an automatic mail order shopping, though that might take long enough to process for their to be a risk of collisions if two hermits ordered within a minute or so.
