Take that to its logical conclusion: a ballot that can be hundreds of millions of names long. There has to be some criteria to be a candidate on the ballot to make names on the ballot useful.

What’s happening in Maine with Christie is different-- he doesn’t have enough signatures to appear on the ballot, but write-in votes would still be tallied in his favor, as he is still legally allowed to run as an eligible candidate.
Do you have any idea how insanely profitable it is to run for president even if you lose? If not for the barebones restrictions there ARE, there’d be THOUSANDS of candidates every primary!

While I’m not voting for Christie or any Republican, I’m not a fan of ballot restrictions. Let people vote for whomever they want.

Are you sure? I read elsewhere on Lemmy that he’s ineligible for voting for, not just literally appearing on the ballot.
Besides, I don’t know if Maine and Colorado are amongst them, but some states don’t allow write-ins.

I believe that you can write anyone’s name in. It just has to be spelled correctly and legible.
