Hi folks, in the next days the ISP will upgrade my 1G symmetric fiber to 10G (for free, the ISP CEO it’s a friend!) here in Italy.

The fiber is AON, no XGS-PON, is delivred by an SFP+ BiDi single fiber.

I know 10G is actually “overkill” at home and I agree with “1G is more then enogh”, but for free upgrade I can’t reject it :)

Anyway, I want to build a low consumption router, maybe an x86 with at least 1x10G SFP+ port to direct connect the provider SFP+ and another 10G SFP+ or baseT to go to LAN.

I’ve see this interesting video regarding Fujitsu S920 ( Cheap & Capable pfSense/OpenWRT Machine! Fujitsu S920 Router Review - YouTube ), but I’m not sure the rea limit with NAT/routing, etc on a singli PCIeX1 lane.

Any advice are welcome!!

    I mean do you even have devices, usecases and infrastructure to even feel a difference? Even with gig I think bottleneck is actually on the server side already for average user.
