The linked article states: “Police Scotland said that they would log rapes as being carried out by a woman if the accused person insists, even if they have not legally changed gender”. So according to that, a man can rape someone, and when caught, tell police that he’s actually a woman (probably hoping to get a lower sentence). How is that beneficial for anyone but rapists?

Whats cringe about it? Just because some rapist says he is a woman doesnt make it true.
