The Atlanta Daily World is a local newspaper and the first Black daily newspaper in the US. Morgan State University is a historically black college/university (HBCU), and this community includes a newsbot that reads from the RSS feed of the newspaper.

Howdy, this is michael@yall.theatl.social - I am utterly horrified about what happened in Jacksonville to Mr. Woods. It is my sincere hope that our justice system identifies and prosecutes those responsible for what happened.

There were comments in this thread advocating for violence against law enforcement in response to this terrible news. I have removed and will continue to remove users and comments that violate the server rules against the advocacy/promotion of violence against anyone, including government officials and employees, on yall.theatl.social. Reporting on violence, as with the article above, does not violate any rules. However, this server will not be the source of threats against others in response to news articles and comments.

I think the archive.ph solution is probably the best. I am the keeper of the bots, 🤖 , so it’s just a matter of adding more code to the script(s).

@NJSpradlin@lemmy.world - would making it more clear in the post title help? I added ($) in the title to indicate paywall, but I can just do (Paywall) which would be less ambiguous.

Some/many people in the Atlanta area have subscriptions to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, so having that news source is helpful for us. But of course adding more info to post title would prevent wasted clicks for those without a subscription.

Howdy, @jackoneill@lemmy.world - paywalled articles - which are from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, are indicated with “$” in the title. If you don’t want to see the articles, you are free to exclude the community from your account.

This shuts down the issue until the next scheduled session of the General Assembly. (Some) House Republicans wanted to hold a special session to move on the issue now; however, only the Governor can call a special session. And the Governor indicating his non-approval would likely make any efforts moot in the regular session in any case.

Absolutely - that is a great idea, @DecaturNature@yall.theatl.social! Do you think we need separate Lemmy communities for each of the local news communities reported on Rough Draft?

This is part of the dehumanization process. Making gays the “other” signals to the community, and the students, that gay people (or well, probably any adjacent minority category) are not worthy of any respect of decency.

And then there’s bullying, violence, or even worse. And when there is bullying or violence, there is no defense against it - because why would that be a bad thing when the community says gays are bad people?

And for gay/lesbian/trans/queer kids, it is just another dagger into the self-respect and self-worth. Having grown up in this shitty milleu in Cobb County, I can say it takes many years of personal work and therapy to purge oneself of internalized hatred.
