  • All that extra expense up front usually needs to be financed. This also cuts into the long-term benefits via interest.

Edit: ex., I went to car and driver to find a comparable ICE and BEV. The Genesis Electric G80 is $21,225 more expensive than its ICE counterpart. Offered 4.9% interest on that amount only is an extra $3k over a five year term.

This brings the [financed period] monthly BEV premium to $400/mo, in just one example. I personally don’t use anywhere near that much gas, and my break even in this case would be closer to ten years. The entry level electric Hyundai Kona is only $10K more and will get you down the road about 190 miles before needing a charge.

  • I like the positive spin of this article, and I think it’s required to keep people motivated about renewables and their impact on climate change, but… another way to phrase this headline is, “Renewables not keeping up with new demand, much less yesterday’s ‘baseline’ requirement.”

It’s not as positive, believe me I know. And I am not poking at all of this amazing progress. My point is, this article tells me we aren’t actually putting a dent in the problem that got us to this point, which was - all by itself - going to keep temperatures moving higher. I feel we are moving into a feedback loop, with higher temps and modernizing countries leading to evermore increased energy consumption.

If renewables growth can’t keep up with demand growth, we need more, and more options, to give the next generation a fighting chance.

  • I don’t know why we’re this way, why the news organizations compete to be first to report on something, even with almost no information.

I mean, I’m mostly okay with them posting to let the community know they are digging into it. To let other outlets know. This is all on the up and up. I think what I get pissed at is how people (just look around these posts) take that very limited information and invent their own narrative. That becomes their reality no matter what future reporting shows. It’s sickening how fickle and susceptible people are to nudging towards a belief, and an entire belief system, based on very little actual facts.

Are there shit bag cops out there? YES. Are there systemic issues with the way we police? YES.

But, FUCK. Let’s at least wait until there are actual facts about a story to pull out pitch forks. Buncha fucking rage junkies.
