Doesn’t “lumpen” just mean someone without class consciousness?

He’s like one of the only Klingon we’ve seen who isn’t a primarily a warrior. Like, if house titles come with land and ships, then there must be people working the land, people building the ships. What are they like? What do they think of the empire?
ok, the bit at the end actually got me
so he did have an internet presence…?

The “special sauce” is that he’s seasoned television personality first, and a politician at distant second. He knows what looks good on stage. He’s got the theatrical instinct (arguably the only real skill he has). He’s willing to court an audience, there’s an audience that wants to be courted.
We’re a TV-brained people, us yankees. It’s how we get our ideas of the world. But there’s a contradiction that comes with it - we can’t help but compare the television show to our actual lived experience. For a lot of people, Donald Trump gives them permission to do what they were going to do anyway. He sells them the dream that the disconnect between television and lived experience will go away if they just keep watching TV. Specifically watch him. And buy his merch.
Great Man Theory would see him authoring events. He’s done no such thing. Events author him - he just happens to embody a pretty core contradiction in american society. If he never existed… someone else would fill the niche. Probably not in the same way, or to the same timetable. But the potential would still be there, would find someone to fill the void.
Americans can’t make good docs. Most of the time they underestimate the audience and dumb down the content. And they always feel like they’re somehow competing with “real films”, so they play it up like there’s supposed to be ACTION and INTENSITY while… doing an interview or filming a bug or whatever.
yankee christians think they’re persecuted simply because other people have the freedom to write at photograph what they like
this was a particularly funny post of his. i almost kind of get his frustration, there isn’t a cohesive left wing political project in the US, so you look silly acting like there is. This century’s “woke” is last century’s “hippie”; he’s getting mad at a shifting sense of what’s polite, what’s considered right and wrong; there’s no earnest political movement behind it, just cultural evolution.
Right? He painstakingly goes over the minutia of how test are made, then at the very end admits that
[tests show] deep inequality along racial and class lines
but he has no broader analysis. He’d rather take apart the most vapid 150-character tweets than generously consider why people feel so negatively about tests.
Like, yes, test show racial and class inequality, and they have done for a very long time. But we’ve never done anything with that insight. Instead, the test are used to dole out grants and resources to the highest performing schools and students. We could use the tests as a tool for measuring and iterating on our institutions of education. But we don’t. We just use them to decide who gets full ride scholarships. Most people understand that, even if they can’t articulate it well. Even he understands that! He just isn’t interested in that conversation.
I wonder how they think we’re gonna get a parliament or even ranked choice

People who believe the ends justify the means
“it would be good if genocide were to stop, but that hardly excuses putting paint to stone”
before the Dot Com Crash, this was a much easier argument to make
“computer new, therefore infinite profit maybe?” silicon valley is still running on this assumption, only they have to twist their justifications that much more with each decade
occams razor says this computer update mess was the result of a (relatively) new start up being dumb and cutting corners, ignoring accepted procedure
but at the same time, there’s something so so poignant about the name being CrowdSTRIKE. It’s like they were begging the cosmos for a globe spanning error
