  • I mean, this honestly just sounds like you’re saying he’s really good at vapid “commentary” that is little more than broad observational humour that falls apart on close inspection. “Stupid people are stupid” isn’t exactly putting you up there with George Carlin.

This is exactly the problem South Park has; the only “commentary” they’re actually willing to commit to is “everyone sucks”. This is neither helpful, nor in any way actually accurate.

As the saying goes, if everywhere you go smells like dogshit, check your shoes.

The problem is that a lot out economics relies on “models” that estimate the price of milk by assuming a frictionless cow on an infinite plane. There’s a distinct lack of attempts to actually test the models against reality, or simply study reality itself (the reason likely being that when people do study reality instead of models, the progressive economists most often turn out to be right)

  • I mean, the movie doesn’t actually know what it’s trying to be. It’s a dystopia where everyone is too stupid to function, but a megacorp has zero difficulty arranging the infrastructure and logistics needed to water crops with sports drinks, while also engaging in massive regulatory capture to make this happen. It’s a world where intelligence has disappeared but they somehow have super advanced scifi tech everywhere that hasn’t broken down even though logically no one should have a clue how to maintain it. Oh, and despite being apparently the worst possible future, as soon as someone comparitively smart shows up they immediately put him in charge of the country instead of, say, handing it over to said megacorp.

Idiocracy is an incoherent mess masquerading as satire, while it’s only cogent point is “I hate anyone who has ever shopped at Walmart.”

Pleeeeaase don’t think about the fact that this movie is kind of basically supporting pushing eugenics… It’s totally a political commentary about how bad Republicans are, and definitely not actually propagating hardcore Randian Libertarian ideals in its insistence that certain types of people are just inherently, genetically, more suited to rule over others.

  • Quantum Thief is genuinely amazing. It’s a book that somehow manages to be both the hardest of hard scifi (the author’s day job is doing hyper advanced quantum math), and also completely batshit insane. There are superheroes, hyper-advanced civilisations built on WOW clans, weapons that use human minds as ammo, a city where people have to make contracts just to remember each others names and where time is currency… And that’s just book one.

The fact that two of the main characters stole a moon is quite literally a footnote. It’s such a minor detail that it gets mentioned in passing. That’s the level of insane this series operates on.

  • Being a terminal purist is wonderful for those of us who live our lives deep in the caverns of Linux, but in actual production use you very often find situations where less technical users have to interact with the systems that we build.

For my work, I need a way for low level tech support and technicians to go in and restart a container from time to time, and these people curl up in a ball and scream if you show them a command prompt. Having a UI removes a lot of friction.

  • There’s this thing where normally surprising court rulings result in a lot of breathless over reaction from the public, while serious legal commentators are going “Guys, no, it doesn’t actually work that way, it’s not nearly as bad as you think.”

The Trump immunity ruling is the only time I’ve ever seen those serious legal commentators saying “Holy shit this is so much worse than you think.” People are seriously underestimating just how bad this really is.
