The original generation of neocons had an understanding of material reality and sought to drive the USSR and China, two massive countries with socialist governments, apart. The ideological justifications of freedom or whatever were secondary. This new generation of interventionists genuinely believe the ideological stuff and is unwittingly trying to speedrun a eurasian super economy.

Exactly, the personal virtue (or lack thereof) of any US politician is completely irrelevant. The only thing that matters is how much the left can make them afraid of losing their jobs. This is why the discourse about the morality of voting is so tedious.

The threat of Trump liquidating the administrative state and democratic party, real or imagined, has pressured dems at the highest level to do the previously unthinkable; demonstrate basic political instincts.

Do people not get tired of posting the same memes about voting every election cycle? It’s so performative and narcissistic. Discussing politicians in terms of their personal virtue and voting in terms of individual moral choices you’re effectively talking about nothing.

I just elaborated on this in another comment but my theory on this is that the democrats are still functioning as a political party while the Republicans have been gutting their own structures for short term financial profit.

I think it’s true that Biden is a shit candidate who damaged his own credibility as well as the credibility of the democratic party and liberalism in general by digging in his heels on Israel and bashing the student protests.

I think it’s also true that Trump only won in 2016 because he promised some kind of change that never materialized. I’ve also heard word of him gutting every structure of the Republican party he touches which could impact the election more than people assume.

These are two world-historically unpopular and disliked candidates who are both profoundly stupid and inept. The difference could end up being that the Democrats are still more or less a political machine and the Republicans are being run by slumlords who don’t really care if the building collapses long term.

I think the hype around a 2024 Trump victory is massively overblown and chronically online. The Republican party is a freakshow that offers zero appeal to anyone not already bought in to its absurd culture war spectacle.

They have their dug-in solid 60+ demographic but their messaging about mass deportation and children’s genitals is profoundly alienating to the average American, more alienating than most people could guess based on available data.

Sickening to think that some of these guys will be flying first class to Miami if the NATO regime in Ukraine falls.

God imagine being some entrenched conservative ghoul playing the long game hoping for a VP pick and he picks this screendamaged Thiel bloodboy who spends most of his free time on discord talking to future school shooters and playing HOI4 (probably).

Trump picking Vance might be the only thing that could lose him the election.

Something very anachronistic about the Trump shooter. A muddled, borderline apolitical past, a white male high school rifle club reject. It’s like the gags in The Simpsons when they’d show first generation Polish immigrant kids with flatcaps playing stickball in a scene set in the 1980’s. Not saying it’s fake or scripted, just interesting that such people still exist.
