I think we are just a bit biased and disconnected from the general user.

You see, the problem is not that the bot is generally useless. It’s just that bots are not ‘useful’ to you in particular (and to most Lemmy users as of today). Most of the people using this particular website are used to reading a lot of technical (and non-technical) stuff and therefore, are generally good at understanding most computer and internet concepts, which is something I cannot say for the general population outside of these circles. Imagine the old lady trying to buy something on the ‘interweb’ or people who are just not particularly computer literate or ‘tech savy’.

In your case, you mention a bot giving you an answer that you yourself were too lazy to look-up. I’m pretty sure lot’s of people don’t know where to search and/or don’t even bother reading/searching answers to their problems.

Edit: In reality I agree with you, bots are incredibly frustrating and I do not have any evidence to them ever being helpful, I just wanted to entertain a different idea.

I apologise if this doesn’t quite cut it as a microthought due to the text extension. The idea really is quite simple, it’s just a feeling that’s been invading me lately, I just wanted to find the right words to express it.

I work with data, and just today I found the longest name in our database, it was 46 characters long counting spaces and it consisted of three names and three surnames (which in reality is only two, but one is twice as long).

Mine is 37 characters long and I have two first names and a “Del”. My girlfriend’s is 33 and she has three first names.

The “De”, “Del”, “La”, “Los”, “De La” etc, count as part of a surname. For example “Del Río” is a surname.

For the exaggerated example I gave before, I chose a Telenovela sounding name, those are very uncommon but do exist in the wild. For more examples, I’d recommend you check out spanish royalty names, they are a lot longer and include a bunch of titles a la ‘king of the Andals and the First Men, lord of the seven kingdoms and protector of the realm’ but with saint names and things like that.

You know, having a Latino name takes this to the next level.

I think this is due to the fact that we’ve become a more sensible and empathetic society recently. We have access to more education, mental health, etc. We have a better understanding of the importance of childhood as a developing phase for human beings, and just how vulnerable children are.

I mean, sixty-seventy years ago, the US still had apartheid; that’s how much we have changed as a society (I’m not american, but there have been many cultural and social movements all over the world)

I completely agree with you there, Lemmy is its own thing. People are nice and respectful, communities are more constructive and less competitive, mods actually like what they’re doing; the “vibe” is completely different here. No karma or awards incentives, pure cooperation and real social interactions.

I also didn’t quite understand your first point; what does openhab mean? And how is it possible that the people you mention aren’t getting hacked? Is it related to the second point about using ssh keys? I read in another comment that hackers could compromise my home network if I’m not careful enough, so I want to be extra cautious with that. (I hope I’m not lacking in common sense… perhaps it’s my reading comprehension that’s lacking… Yeah, that must be it!)

Thanks! This actually helps me a lot, I’m lacking a bit of knowledge on ports and stuff, it sounds a bit daunting to have that many ports to choose from, but if you narrow it to that one port and another temporal one it gets easier haha, thank you, I never know which ports to use for stuff.

I’ve been reading some other comments and I think I’ve kind of figured out what to do, it’s just a matter of doing some more research, as you mentioned the how-to’s are easy to find online, but the bones of my plan are kind of there haha.

I’m also worried about getting attacked or hacked, so I’ll be doing my research on that too… Maybe, if the risks are to high I might have to compromise with a small short-term deployment (just for the accomplishment) and then switch to a more reasonable project, perhaps trying linode or something.
