I always appreciate the PG plugs, great art should be free for everyone. I usually choose to pay a little bit extra for the Penguin/Oxford versions of classic books simply because the notes and essays included make a lot of difference in understanding the important contextual details. It’s completely up to the reader though.

I thought I just sucked at 19th century English but then I realized the writing was a little too indecipherable. When I looked up another version I realized it was completely different, as though it was run through a translator and then back into English. I’m afraid it’s a very common scam.

Because I don’t want to crush my friend’s confidence when he’s just starting out. I gave him a thorough list of things I’d recommend doing in the future offline. A public review isn’t a place for that criticism.
Yeah I had a rough go reading a friend’s self pub book. Riddled with grammar and spelling errors on every page, one dimensional characters, poor use of humor in lieu of character development, and just about every urban fantasy cliché you can think of. I finished it and wrote a great review of it because I know my friend has potential, he just needs to grow as a writer. It was hard to push through it though.
The mental gymnastics to justify this must be wild. “But I’m doing this to benefit you!” while their kid is wondering why mom is so wound up over nothing.
