Is this really what we are going to be? I don’t recall the community every banning people left and right for comments like these. I myself made similar arguments before, where is my ban and comment removal? OP here did not post anything in bad faith, they didn’t come to troll, nobody complained and there also wasn’t a flood of the community. There was a total of 17 comments, 7 were removed, and 5 are just the mod getting into fights with people, and the post was locked after that. This is something you support?

Speaking of the mod, they are aggressive and insulting in every comment they make, almost every post is “don’t vote for Harris”, and this has been flooding the local instance for some time now (11 posts “don’t vote for Harris” in 2 days last week). There is absolutely nothing constructive in this whole story, just one person making as much noise as possible without adding anything constructive and then banning people who make good faith counter-arguments. I thought this was one mod out of control, but if you support all of this, if this is what the slrpnk anarchist community is, I have to say that I am profoundly disappointed in this instance. I can only hope that the majority of slrpnk.net would condemn this whole story, they just aren’t aware.

Oh wow. I actually thought about bringing this up somewhere, but it was late and I went to sleep, I didn’t know that there was already a post. On one hand I’m glad this got out, on the other hand it saddens me that this likely did a lot of damage to both the community and the view of anarchists in general, since it takes just one person like this to overshadow 10 anarchists willing to have conversations in good faith. In an anarchist community, it’s anarchists who should decide what sort of content and posts they want in their community, not a bunch of electioneering liberals who want to swamp the entirety of lemmy with their US-centric liberal viewpoints.

As far as I know, nobody complained about anything in the community, only the mod who decided to remove half of the comments, ban people making reasonable comments and locked the thread.

This wasn’t a case of someone going to an anarchist community and starting arguments about why strong central authority is necessary or whatever, when you make a post, you don’t use your mod powers to pick and choose which comments you like, which you don’t and then lock the tread with a grand total of 10 comments.

And if anyone was swamping lemmy, it was the mod who posted like 15 anti-Harris memes within one hour and made it half of the local slrpnk feed that day.

There is also the popular: “The smart and hard working farmers were rich, so they were killed by the commies, and only the lazy and stupid ones were left. Since they were lazy and didn’t know how to work, food production was lower and that created the famine!”

How the hell do you reply to someone who just completely made up a story and believes in it? When I eventually asked how is the Netherlands not burning to the ground when they are tolerant, he actually said “Not yet”. Exactly my thoughts. You could copy that speech from the beginning, replace every instance of Germany/Germans with Russia/Russians, replace Poland with Ukraine, and you’ll have milions of people nodding as saying: “Yes, that makes sense, defend Russia!”

As someone working in the tech industry (not from the US), the comparatively better working conditions and pay compared to most other jobs sadly create a big bubble for most people, where the ideas of exploitation seem like they only occur in manual labour jobs. There doesn’t seem to be much of class consciousness when you and your colleagues are better off than most other people.

Black metal as a genre. I could not believe that anyone seriously listened to that. It was either random noise or actually scary stuff (I am the black wizards actually scared me for some reason lol). But after enough exposure and playing Freezing moon myself, I actually got to enjoy it to the point where now I listend to black metal 80% of the time.

In the same vein, “Sons of Winter and Stars” by Wintersun was so unharmonized and terrible to me when I first listened to it, but after a few listens it became one of my favourite songs

I remember reading “Hypatia: The Life and Legend of an Ancient Philosopher” by Edward J. Watts, and the book makes a really good point on how Hypatia is remembered for her death more than for her life. She’s regarded as a mrtyr for philosophy, as a victim of Christianity, as a feminist icon, but her life and achievements are, unfairly, rarely discussed.

Really recommend the book, it was a very nice and light read. But working from memory, Hypatia taught a variant of Neoplatonism that was acceptable to both Christians and polytheists, and so her lectures could bind the fractured society of Alexandria, as students from all sorts of backgrounds attended.
