While this was resoundingly the expectation, I will admit some sadness that all of Zahn’s new characterization of Thrawn is being discarded in favor of an Heir redux. I’m glad Filoni is getting to live out his dream of Ahsoka’s story, I just wish it didn’t come at the expense of Zahn’s character, who he no doubt cared for much as Filoni cares for Ahsoka.

It was wise of Zahn to make his continuation of the story— Thrawn and Ezra teaming up— known. I imagine he knew what was coming.

The saddest part is that Thrawn’s entire characterization and purpose will likely never be completed, and the book series (where Thrawn truly lives, as film cannot delve into the thoughts of him and his crew) may end at Ascendancy.

Maybe I’m jumping the gun and they’ll get it right, but it doesn’t seem likely.

I was disappointed also, but be aware he’s just arrived, they likely plan for him to be the major antagonist, and I have some hope he’ll show some of that irresistible thrawn charm once he gets going.

I have some faith, but you’re right, this was a major letdown of a debut.

Agreed, maybe he’ll at least get some charm. He felt oddly flat, though Lars’s voice is still on point.

Either way though, using him as the major antagonist will likely ignore most of Zahn’s new work. Since 2017 he’s been characterized more as a good person doing good things, but entirely willing to assist extreme evil (such as slavery) if needed. He didn’t show any of that here, but his appearance was brief, so we’ll see.

I don’t know, I just feel bad for Zahn. They pulled him back to create a new Thrawn story, but it doesn’t look like they’ll respect it. I feel too quick to judge but expected this from the comments he had been making since 2022.

Heir to the empire was something incredible and special, I didn’t see much of that in rebels, I’m not expecting to see it now.

But I’m willing to give them runway, he’s a phenomenal character, let’s see what filoni can do with room.

Also hope we get more books, the last one especially was nice, he was finding his footing.

BTW, there was 1 singular moment where I had a lump in my throat.

When he asked about the loose thread, there was that fraction of a second where you could see you had his full attention, and the intensity was blinding, the mind was at work like a lightsaber.

After he went right back to “my plan is underway, all of this has been accounted for”, but that instant reaction was just chilling :)
