Yeah I’m all for some dark humor, but can we not make this Reddit 2.0 or whatever?

Dark humor is humor generated from your own pain.

Edgy humor is humor generated from the pain of others.

The first one is funny, the second is boring and shitty

Eh. I’d say there’s exceptions. Maybe more to the point of “Don’t Punch Down”?

I can laugh all day at the rich/privileged suffering the consequences of their own mistakes.

“Don’t Puch down” is good rule to live by.

Maybe the rich/privileged are controlling/influencing so much of our lifes that this counts as your own pain.

Not certain the rich feel pain the same way, but you’re right. Punching up has value and often is the right thing to do

I feel that privilege is a concept that should be applied to classes, not individuals. You can’t just judge someone as privileged based on one aspect of their life.

The whole “punching up” concept just leads to it being accepted to make misogynistic jokes at white women, ablist and body-shaming jokes at “creepy” men, racist jokes at wealthy Asians, and so on.

Rather, I think the intent behind the joke, and the consequences of the stereotypes it reinforces, is what should be examined rather than the demographic on the receiving end.

I think its more the way humor is used/intended.

The problem is that people use humor as a weapon. If you fall those people point a finger at you and laugh while calling you an idiot.

Others use it as a way to deal with stuff or in general just see it as something to make light of a situation. Those people would also laugh but they would come to your help, ask if everything is alright and would help you up. While knowing that everybody falls down sometimes and that it can funny.

Everything can be funny with the right people and that helps to cope.

I got no problem with humor… But rasistical humor I don’t really care for. It is possible to have fun without hurting loads of peoples feelings.

Dark humor is good as long as it’s actually dark humor. As much as I hated the power mods of Reddit, Awkwardtheturtle’s constant trolling of the dark humor sub was fucking hilarious. He’d throw random rules on posting and commenting that would take off most comments and posts by default. Seeing those immature assholes lose their shit over not being able to be as racist is hilarious.

      Redditor “You like dark humor?”

      Me “Yeah sure I guess”

Redditor “I LIKE RAPING BABIES AND MURDERING MINORITIES! I ALSO BEAT MY WIFE! PLEASE LAUGH!”

I like dark humor, just as long it’s not about skin color. It’s weird how many racists seem to be attracted to meme channels.

The problem with racist humor is that theres a limited number of premises. How many ways can you make a slavery or no father joke about black people? How many math jokes can you make about asians? Muslim terrorists? You get the idea.

I dont want the same lazy bullshit over and over. I want my dark humor to be fresh! I want my Titan submarine jokes before the bubbles reach the surface.

Racist humor isnt “dark” humor, its lazy tired rehashed crap. Real dark humor is like kids with leukaemia, it never seems to get old.

They are not attracted to it because it’s racial, they are attracted to it because it is taboo.

There was a lot of dog whistle racism is subs like r/publicfreakout

Any community as large as Reddits is going to have a some arseholes but it largely depended on which sort of subs you were subscribed to.

Fair, I never went on those subs and I’d imagine most Redditors didn’t. I’d also imagine there are some Lemmy instances which are just as bad if not worse. I guess that’s a bit different because federation means those communities are isolated from other instances, but I don’t know if practically it’s any different when it’s so easy to have accounts across multiple instances. I’d imagine anyone using one of those highly isolated instances on Lemmy will have an account on another instance.

4.6 million subscribers all time out of 1.7 billion monthly active users. Roughly the 90th most popular subreddit, which is quite large but it’s still a fraction of a percent of users.

There was and still is a shit ton of racism on Reddit, among other -ism hate.

People like to hate on groups they deem “other” or less than. r/Freespeech is stuffed to the gills with transphobia and homophobia, for example. Anyone else remember r/FatPeopleHate? r/The_Donald hasn’t been gone that long. etc etc etc.

Since lemmy is federaversed I would imagine that much worse crap than what you see on Reddit can come to the surface… I hope to see a community where this is not the case… But since everyone can create it’s own instance everything can exist.
