Thanks for the info, its definetly not something that anyone would want to happen but not as bad as it seemed. Does anybody have any articles or other places to learn about china’s aging demographics and low-birth rate/sex-imbalance stuff that isnt western stuff and doomerism “china is OWNED they’re gonna COLLAPSE ANY DAY NOW” and preferably from a communist pov? Though any neutral source would be great cause so far I’ve only seen western stuff and I never trust those to be transparent and non-propaganda.

I seriously doubt China has good protection for mid and late life illnesses. Retirement is more than just a societal expiration date.

As an immigrant, I can say with certainty that the vast majority of the people will not emigrate if there are economic and job opportunities in their own countries. Nobody wants to settle in a foreign land speaking a foreign language and away from the rest of your family. Of course, this choice is only made attractive because Western imperialism has destroyed your country’s economy and forcing people to look elsewhere for jobs, willing to work low wages to compete with domestic labor in Western imperial core.

The problem with China is that it is still very much an export-oriented economy, which means they have to suppress their wages to make their exports competitive, and they have to grow their exports in order to sustain the growth of their economy, i.e. raising living standards and poverty alleviation. As such, the aging demographics is bad for China’s export-oriented economy.

So, by encouraging immigration, it’s still taking labor from other developing countries, so sustaining the growth of their economy at the expense of other countries.

A much better solution here is to abandon the neoliberal free trade system altogether and transition into a domestic consumption economy. Here, living standards and wages are raised directly through government spending, instead of export revenues. It will also enable China to decouple from its reliance on the increasingly hostile and weaponized US dollar, where most of their export revenues comes from. Finally, it also allows China to re-distribute the productive capacity to the rest of the Global South, a privilege which it has long enjoyed and a deliberate strategy of the US to suppress the development of the Global South by containing the global production mostly in China.

By doing so, an aging demographics becomes less of a problem because you’re no longer relying on increasing labor productivity to earn export revenues. The problem of increasing retirement age is resolved by itself.

The question is how long will it take, or how much worse the situation has to be, before countries start to abandon neoliberalism and look for a new economic paradigm? So far, everyone is still pretending as if the world is not in crisis, and that radical change is needed before the world falls off a cliff.

Sure but China should too given their real estate bust, aging population and inroads into Africa. Part of the reason they don’t unfortunately is cultural.
