I see reports of pretty much all communications down, but no indication that am radio is picking up slack or pitching in. Are there that few operators left?
The entire island didn’t burn down. The relatively small area where communications are down is like a 10-20 minute drive from areas that are fine.

Widespread power outages there.
I’m not sure there is much slack to pick up. Local broadcasters put out informational messages, emergency services are active, and mobile cell towers are being deployed. While deadly, the fire itself affects a small area, so you won’t hear large amounts of HF traffic in/out of Hawaii.
Hawaii ARES has been activated and, as to be expected with a local disaster, is leaning heavily into VHF/UHF. Their current status is here: https://bit.ly/HAM-UPDATE

Do you have any newspaper stories? I was wondering about communication myself. When you say “AM,” I’m assuming you referring to commercial radio.
