Before stand names are mostly named after music references, in their debut in part 3 Stardust Crusaders, they are all named after either tarot cards (for the earlier appearing stands of both protagonists and antagonists), or Egyptian gods (for the enemy stands of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods that appear after our protagonists arrive at Egypt).

Correction

Um actually … Not all stands in part 3 are named after tarot cards or Egyptian gods. Cream by Vanilla Ice is named after the British band.
(Also, there is Tenor Sax, but he was defeated before we learn of his stand name)

    I dunno if this really counts, because JoJo was doing music references as early as Phantom Blood. REO Speedwagon, and Dio are clear references, followed by Cars, AC/DC and Wham!

    Araki just really likes musical references and has always included them.
