      There is a curious quality difference, isn’t there? I always wonder what causes that. Material technology constraints, or just a mediocre craftsman?

        Looks like the gold work was done by someone unpracticed. I’ve never done anything quite like this, but the person that did that filigree had no plans for symmetry. My earliest airbrushed graphics looked something like this. I didn’t know how to plan things out in detail and lacked the overview perspective required for the job. They could have made the surrounding stones look more uniform with symmetry surrounding them, but went the other direction and made them look worse. In the end, it likely survived so long because no one wore or wanted it.
