It’s their politicians and media. I believe people in the UK when polled are less transphobic than in the USA. In that they generally don’t care much either way.

But in the USA it became part of the culture war so if you’re vaguely dem aligned your at least performatively less transphobic.

But there’s small number of influential TERFs that infest both Labour side and the tories, that get their voices elevated by the media and parties.

The BBC is like the inverse of Hollywood. Both very insular, both with very homogeneous politics, but in two different directions.

JK Rowling is funnelling literally millions of pounds into anti-trans groups. She will continue to fund them to the tune of hundreds of millions over the coming decades.

If she stopped existing tomorrow due to covid (or whatever) it would be an absolutely massive blow to the anti-trans movement and would probably actually be felt outside the UK too. She’s that fucking important.

Won’t this harm the cis children on puberty blockers to treat early puberty too? Oh who am I kidding, hurting people if it means also hurting trans people is the name of the game.

CW: me complaining about my friends' transphobia

I hate that my best friend and her partner, who are otherwise very radical and good comrades, are supportive of this shit. Idk what to do about it other than loudly voice my support for trans rights and early access to medical treatment whenever I can but they are firmly in this mindset of “children shouldn’t be on drugs” for a constellation of fucked up reasons (including “because it’s not natural” hippie crank shit)

Idk what happened to them because aside from that their politics are basically hexbear orthodoxy, and only her partner is really exposed to social media (my friend literally has no time for anything other than work or caring for her kids). She literally has a trans sister and as far as I can tell is fully supportive of her, and she herself is very much some form of genderqueer/androgynous by her own statements so it’s not like she’s some kind of chud in that regard. They just both “don’t think kids should be transitioning”

If anyone has any books that might help convince her that supporting early transition is a good thing let me know and I can recommend them to her because I’d really like them to get over this chud shit

Any medical intervention with the success rate of gender transition and affirmative care would be hailed as a miracle of modern science, but since it challenges the dominant gender norms…

My book that I suggest is called “Threatening them with death” popuko-gun

But they should seriously read Leslie Feinberg. Also you should call them pieces of shit transphobes that want people to go through a ton of unnecessary pain, including things like laser, electrolysis, recorrective surgeries, suicidal ideation, later in life. Plenty of conditions are treated well before they become problems, only gender dysphoria receives so much scrutiny.

Thank you I will be sure to recommend it to her. I want to save her at least. Im worried her partner influenced her this way but idk when her views on this started so idfk.

Point out that they don’t actually believe that. Like do they think that a kid with epilepsy shouldn’t be allowed to have medicine to prevent seizures? If a kid with severe allergies has an allergic reaction should they just die instead of taking an epipen? If a kid has type 1 diabetes should they be banned from taking insulin (a, gasp, hormone!!) lest it interfere with the natural behaviour of their pancreas? Heck, they probably even support puberty blockers as long as they’re for cis kids. Like if a 5 year old starts menstruating are they gonna say that everything’s fine.

Chances are they don’t actually believe any of this and don’t actually think kids “shouldn’t be on drugs”, they just think trans people are scary and deviant and that our suffering is, at best, not real and at worst believe that we deserve it
