My modded 3DS is my constant companion. I’ve got a pc, the AYN Odin, a switch, but it’d the 3DS that I always come back to.

Truly one of the best libraries and one of the most charming devices out there.

Let’s have a thread commemorating it! Share your memories, favorite games, anything.

The thing I will always miss the most about the 3DS was Streetpass. I made a few friends in collage because we kept Streetpassing each other all the time and eventually met up and starting talking. Not to mention I’d take my 3DS with me on trips to NYC and get hundreds of Streetpasses from people all over the world. It definitely made carrying around the 3DS worthwhile and it’s a shame that we’ll probably never see something like that again.

Streetpass was such a cool, and fun thing. I’d love to have an app on my phone that worked like streetpass, with some modern controls. Just collecting people’s miis was silly and some people got really creative with it.

Man I miss StreetPass too. Years ago when I had an original 3DS I’d try and leave it in sleep mode as often as possible when my family would drive several states away to see distant families at Christmas. For one trip id get dozens of hits.

I just bought a New 3DS XL right before last Christmas and I tried the same thing and got zero hits from either drive.

If anybody here hasn’t hacked your 3ds yet, make sure to do so before updating. Nintendo pushed an update to break most hacks after closing the eShop.

As in if you get the update you can’t apply the hacks? Am I good if I have an old hacked one or do I need to watch our for Nintendo doing some sneaky update that’ll brick it? I hacked mine like 4 years ago but I haven’t touched it a while so not sure if I need to do anything else.

General rule of thumb is to update luma before performing a system update. If the luma version is old, then it wont support the latest 3ds update and wont boot to the home menu.

This doesnt mean its bricked, but that you are now forced to take out your sd card and update luma to boot to the home menu properly.

So just update luma, then do a system update and you are good. Worst case is that it fails to boot, you update luma on your sd card, and then boot just fine anyways.

Is there any reason to ever do a system update now that the shop is closed, or can I just happily go on ignoring that and install homebrew and cias to my hearts content?

The only reason would be playing games online, old firmware gets locked out a couple weeks after an update releases.

But there’s also no real reason not to if you’re already running CFW. As long as Luma is reasonably up-to-date, a system update can’t break anything.

No reason to update, really. Afaik they haven’t added any features of bugfixes for years. You can get rid of the annoying system update popups by deleting pending titles in FBI and disabling Wi-fi.

If you’re already hacked with a reasonably recent luma it’s safe to update, the latest update just breaks most of the initial exploits that let you hack it in the first place.

3ds.hacks.guide has a note about it with more details on the main page.

I’m aggravated by all the people who said the 3DS was “dead” now, when the eshop closed. Like, no? There are no new games, sure, but there’s a shitload of old ones, and nothing has actually replaced the 3DS. I’ll be playing and enjoying it for a long time yet!

It feels like saying a kitten is dead just because they’ve finished growing - it just means they’re a complete cat now. That’s great. (yes, I realize this metaphor is a bit much. But even so.)

I think the metaphor is great. Calling an adult cat dead would indeed be extreme. But calling a perfectly working piece of hardware dead is also extreme. I wouldn’t call my toaster dead because the people who made it don’t make toasters anymore.

We’ve become far to accustomed in this day and age to accept that because something has software on it that it’s expiration date is decided by the company that made it. Cats don’t work like that, toasters don’t work like that, and neither should game consoles.

In practice that means modding is very important. And unfortunately many companies make that very difficult or impossible. But we should celebrate any product where that is possible, even at launch and its estore equivalent is still around.

Edit: dead cat not alive cat

I’ve been playing Pokémon Sun now on my modded 3DS for a month and closing in on filling the dex. It definitely feels good to just grab a small handheld (even tho mine is XL) and play a light game.

I’ve always wanted a 3DS but never really got around to owning one. I guess I’ll stay a PSP fanboy to the end, I still have a working PSP Go that I got off a garage sale for $20. Hoping I can get a 3DS for that cheap some day.

There’s this game I played on my ds many years ago called Lost In Blue and that series is only available on DS. I really want to play it. Is it easy to find a molded DS?

Lost in Blue came out on the original DS. You could always get a cheap DS lite and a flashcart off of Ali Express.

If you want a 3DS you may be able to find a pre-modded system but I would avoid paying extra for it. The whole process doesn’t take very long and there’s a lot of good guides out there.

Also you’ll likely get random mainstream games when buying a pre-modded system. They won’t have every game out there due to the size of 3DS and DS games (compared to something like NES ROMs) so you’ll likely end up having to do a little bit of work yourself.

I used this guide by the way

DSs tend to be cheap but you can also easily play DS titles on a 3ds with twilight menu++ if you have one!

That was the cool survival, island game right?

The 3DS was at its best when playing 2.5D games with a veneer of 3D layering put on top. The Nintendo 3D Classics series and Shovel Knight were a prime example of that.

I love the Ace Attorney, Professor Layton, Zero Escape, and Ghost Trick games. We really haven’t had anything since. I’ll always think fondly on those “digital novel” games.
