His ‘Sleepy Joe’ nickname for his rival seems to have come full circle, with social media users now calling Mr Trump ‘Sleepy Don’

While the rest of the world can’t peel their eyes away as Donald Trump’s historic criminal trial gets under way in New York, the former president himself appears to be far less enthralled by the proceedings.

Jury selection got under way on Monday in the first-ever criminal trial of a sitting or former president, as he faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a bid to cover up hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

But, according to some courtroom reporters, Mr Trump appeared to struggle to keep his eyes open – and at one point may have even fallen asleep.

“Trump appears to be sleeping. His head keeps dropping down and his mouth goes slack,” *New York Times *reporter Maggie Haberman reported.

The observation quickly inspired a new nickname for the 77-year-old former president: “Sleepy Don.”

    So…

In 2024 we have one candidate who can’t stay awake during his criminal trial…

And one candidate who isn’t facing criminal charges because of his age and memory issues…

Special counsel Robert Hur has declined to prosecute President Joe Biden for his handling of classified documents but said in a report released Thursday that Biden’s practices “present serious risks to national security” and added that part of the reason he wouldn’t charge Biden was that the president could portray himself as an “elderly man with a poor memory” who would be sympathetic to a jury.

“Our investigation uncovered evidence that President Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen,” the report said, but added that the evidence “does not establish Mr. Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/joe-biden/special-counsel-says-evidence-biden-willfully-retained-disclosed-class-rcna96666

Why do people keep acting like Biden and trump are in anyway capable of being president?

This could be the easiest election ever if Dems just ran someone who wasnt 20 years past retirement age.

I said neither are good enough.

How ridiculous is it that any time anyone points out Biden’s obvious ineptitude, the response is always “Both sides are not the same.” No shit they aren’t the same. The only people that ever bring up the “both sides are the same” thing are the morons claiming it’s not true.

Step 1: Read a comment Step 2: Respond to what the comment says or just do nothing.

There is no Step 1.5 that says you have to make up a bunch of bullshit to respond to. If you don’t have a response, then just say nothing. You don’t have to pretend like there is stuff there isn’t just to have something to say.

I think their point was that while both sides may not be great options (the original comment’s point), there is a huge difference in the level of how not-great they are, and leaving it at t"hey are both not great" is a disservice to those not immersed in the political landscape because this election could be VERY close and the consequences of not voting for Biden, despite all of his shortcomings, significantly impact the entire world, especially Americans.

because this election could be VERY close

            Because we’re running a bad candidate against a worse…

Like, why are so many people mad at the ones pointing out Biden is a bad candidate instead of Biden for staying in the race as a bad candidate that might not even be able to beat trump?

            There’s no logic to that

You can’t just shout down everyone that mentions Biden’s flaws.

But if the whole Dem voter base says Biden isn’t acceptable and we need a better candidate, there’s still 2 months to the Democratic convention.

Shit isn’t too late to do the one thing that would most help prevent trump from becoming president:

Run a candidate popular with voters.

In general, yes, run a candidate that is popular with voters. You can’t do that this year. No one who is unknown would have the time to get enough traction to beat Trump. No one who is well known is liked enough to motivate people to get to the polls.

I don’t think people are saying don’t criticize Biden or don’t criticize the system that resulted in Biden being president the first time and a candidate the second time. By all means, criticize away. He could be worse, sure, but he could be so much better.

What I think people are saying is that when you are comparing Biden and Trump, it’s important to point out that while both are not ideal, one is way worse. People who aren’t paying attention to the level they should will be less motivated to show up to the polls if they just think “everybody sucks.” Biden isn’t great, but Trump is a criminal scumbag who wants to let others strip us of our rights so that he can play king.

We have 6 months to go. In my opinion, the chances of having a different candidate who will beat Trump in that time is low. Six months ago or more, I would have said it was doable. Statistically, incumbents have a higher rate of reelection than new candidates. Who knows what’s going to happen.

This is absolutely the reasonable take. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Biden people are trying to pretend like they love they idea of someone taking a sloppy shit on their salad just because they don’t want napalm on their salad. You can order the diarrhea dressing without acting like it is a delicacy that should be praised for its brave choice of texture.

Absolute poppycock. There’s maybe a dozen different Dems and Dem-aligned Independents who have enough name recognition and are significantly more popular than Biden.

It’s the DNC leadership and their owner donors standing in the way because he serves their interests. Biden is NOT the least bad candidate possible by a long shot!

Hell, I bet even fucking BETO would stand a better chance of a comfortable win against the worst president in US history, that’s how awful a candidate Biden is!

In no election system is gambling the very democracy of a country on a bad candidate who refuses to own up to and correct his mistakes the smart play.

In fact, it’s EXTRA risky and stupid to insist on such a candidate in a binary system such as the US one.

If and when this becomes the last free presidential election, it won’t be because the people was given a choice and chose poorly. It will be because Biden and the rest of the DNC leadership chose poorly and refused to listen to the warnings and eminently reasonable concerns of the people, effectively disenfranchising everyone who’s neither a member of the fascist Trump cult or an automatically obedient DNC loyalist.

                Yes. We can.

The DNC set the convention for two months from now, if that’s not enough time to run a general campaign, then why is the primary scheduled to keep going on?

Why are so many states not able to vote in the primary until “it’s too late”?

In many elections, that would be reasonable. The difference here is Trump. We have not had a president who so blatantly breaks the law with the level of support he has while his supporters either willfully ignore it or even support it.

So few thought he had a chance to be the Republican nominee in 2016, including Hillary’s campaign. Then, he stomped all of the other Republicans. Still, people he had no chance of winning the general election, and he won. While it is clear he hates learning of any kind (as evidenced by appointing Betsy DeVos, his inability to pay attention to briefings, etc.), his campaign has had opportunities to learn what works and what doesn’t. If the opposition is not unified on ONE candidate against Trump, Trump will win. The consequences of that are too dire, and this we gotta eat the white bread with Kraft singles sandwich. It’s better than the diarrhea sandwich people keep pointing to.

                    The difference here is Trump

This is the third election in a row where it’s trump tho…

And if he loses, he’s likely running again. If he wins, 2028 is going to be someone else just as bad if not worse.

We can’t run a country “paycheck to paycheck”, we have to plan further ahead than “next election”.

Still, people he had no chance of winning the general election, and he won.

Because we keep running unpopular candidates against him

So let’s stop doing that? Biden barely beat trump by the skin of his teeth and Biden is substantiallynless popular than he was four years ago with his own voter base. And that cost over a Billion dollars to beat trump in 2020

There’s no logical reason not to run a candidate that voters actually like

Nearly everyone on both sides can’t get beyond the simple instruction of “I have to hate one with all my might, and I have to love one with all my might” anything more complex than this just melts their brains. Anyone who points out this obvious fact is seen as an absolute trader equally by both sides.

Nuance has taken a distant 2nd place to black-and-white thinking. It used to be that the blue team was less fanatic than the red team, they’ve become indistinguishable in this regard, and we are getting to the point where nearly everyone doesn’t even realise that it wasn’t always this way. It is just that the red team got converted to mindlessness a few years before the blue team did.

I feel like it’s in nearly every thread on here when Trump or Biden gets mentioned. I guess it’s just easier to see when you’re not head-over-heels for one of them.

I’m sure that if you keep an eye out for it, you’ll start to see it. That is, if you can quiet the voice in your head that keeps telling you how awful it is if you question Biden’s brilliance. Seriously, it’s not a religion, it’s OK if you doubt a little bit every now and then.

Again, no one is head over heels for Biden. I have not seen a single serious comment here that says you can’t or shouldn’t criticize Biden. When has someone told you that you can’t criticize him? You keep making this claim that Biden has some kind of cult following like we see with Trump but provide absolutely no evidence to back it up. Seems like you’re projecting or trying to Both Sides everything. That’s all.

You’re missing that the special counsel saying this was extremely editorialized, unprofessional, and dubious at best. This is the counsel’s opinion without facts to back it up.

Whereas Trump falling asleep actually happened without editorializing. NYT is just reporting facts.

I think it may be like a peacock with extremely long feathers. It shows other countries that we are so strong that we can survive even with such a massive handicap.

Even the people that try to argue for the goodness of either candidate just say “at least our candidate sort made it through a speech a while ago”. It’s literally never “You’ve got to see this speech our candidate made. It was incredible! Truly a remarkable individual!”.

p.s. Public comments are public comments. It’s not “stalking” to look at another users comment history.

The modlog is public as well.

Man, you just reminded me how depressing it is both candidates in 2024 are ripping off Reagan’s campaign slogans from over 40 years ago…

Like, they were both middle aged adults at the time, so I’m sure they don’t realize how much it highlights their age issues.

But it’s just depressing republicans and Democrats both go to Ronald fucking Reagan when they think of what voters want.

The dems will field a left wing candidate when the republican alternative isn’t a nazi populist who has stated publicly that he wants to destabilise the entire world and become god emperor for life. Simply put there’s too much at stake to start taking risks.

when the republican alternative isn’t a nazi

                1. That will never happen…

                2. Because that will never happen, it means by your logice will always have a neoliberal as president.

Which is exactly why Clinton’s 2016 primary campaign was rooting for trump

Your path just keeps the country slowly moving right when Dems are in control, and sprinting right when Republicans are.

The end result is we keep going right .

Like, republicans aren’t just magically going to become sane, especially if Dems keep moving right to try and steal voters from Republicans. It just concentrates the crazy and makes more nonvoters.

This isn’t an opinion, it’s been happening for 30+ years. Even if you didn’t notice.

                    What?

The entire political system is engineered so that voters always think “it’s too risky to ask for a good candidate”…

And you’re “making an observation” that we should just keep going along with it in perpetuity?

I’ve voted for decades, always D, and I’ve only been enthusiastic once.

In 2008 for Obama before he let us down. And he got a landslide victory despite being essentially unknown nationally and flipped states that had been red for decades.

The only other time we saw results like that was FDR…

The people want progressive candidates. If the only thing that’s important is beating trump, then we need to run the candidate most likely to win.

History tells us that’s a popular progressive, and not an unpopular neoliberal.

People are celebrating because he just got up to 43% approval…

His best numbers are Obama’s worst.

Biden is less popular with voters than he was four years ago, and it cost a billion dollars to beat Trump by the skin of his teeth.

How is Biden a good candidate?

And keep in mind “not trump” is a pretty common quality shared by almost everyone eligible to run for president.

Generally, when people make predictions about hypothetical futures, there is nothing to cite. Citations are more of a thing when talking about stuff in the past.

Not necessarily, you can post citations for what underlying lines of evidence support that the prediction will be accurate. That’s what you do when trying to prove a hypothesis scientifically.

Now if a prediction = pulling stuff out of your ass you wish was true, that’s more likely that there’s no underlying evidence.

Mr. Biden said in February about the report that he was “especially pleased to see the senior special counsel make clear there’s stark differences between this case and Donald Trump.” But Mr. Biden later said that “there’s even a reference that I don’t remember when my son died. How in the hell dare he raise that? Frankly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself it wasn’t any of their damn business.”

The transcript of Mr. Biden’s interview shows the president was unable to identify the precise year, but that he correctly named the month and date. “What month did Beau die? Oh God — May 30th,” Mr. Biden said in the exchange.

No one is saying that. They’re doing the opposite of that, actually. If they were saying black or white, they would both be 10 or 0. Instead, they’re saying that on a scale of 1-10, Biden is a 2, at best, but Trump is a -50.

There are no great options, but one option is significantly worse than the other.

I agree Biden is a 2, but the scale is 1-10, and Trump is a 1. This ridiculous, over-the-top, non-sensical hyperbole of putting the other candidate at -50 on a scale with a minimum of a 1 is the problem. You can dislike someone without saying that they are 52 points behind on a 10 point scale. This does nothing but encourage the people who want both sides to look/feel like absurdly moronic sheep who can’t do anything but follow the rest of the herd.

Don’t let them win by sacrificing your own self-image and dignity. If you keep pretending to be that stupid just to “show your team loyality”, then you will actually start to see yourself as being as stupid as you’re pretending to be.

The difference is that great. Trump is a criminal, and not ashamed of it. He will sell all of our rights and all of the things that make America a great place (I’m not saying it couldn’t be better, but there are many great things about the US.).

Yes, he is a criminal, and he is not ashamed of it, you’re right. Most politicians are criminals, he just cares less to hide it. It would almost certainly be better if a more embarrassed criminal is in office, I agree.

If a Trump presidency means all of our rights being sold, then I guess we have nothing to worry about because we must not have any rights left for him to sell(he was literally already the president). I know this seems like a simple rebuttal, that’s because it is. This is the problem when you get used to always having people agree with anything that is pro-Biden, it completely deteriorates your ability to debate on the issue.

If you only ever play with cheat codes, when you then encounter someone with any ability to push back you just have curl up in a ball and wait for the anonymous upvotes to stroke your ego and convince you that you must be right because you said “Yay! Biden!”. This is the part where you would typically ignorantly call me a “Trump Fucker”, then I say “No, I don’t like Trump either”, then you just get more angry because it makes no sense to you that maybe I dislike both of the mental patients.

If a Trump presidency means all of our rights being sold, then I guess we have nothing to worry about because we must not have any rights left for him to sell(he was literally already the president).

First run he had somewhat capable people around him to stop or slow him down. The second run is where he will apply lessons learned. It is not imaginary nor fantasy to perceive or see this.

Jesus… I mean, come on man. One moment you want some form of discussion and next you know you vent like a madman. In short, this text reflects on you, not on the party you intended to childishly insult.

And for the record, I also object to this ‘both sides’ nonsense. Is Biden perfect? Of course not. But he will and has tried to do the right things. Again, not always and I have issues with him but what politician is going to do all the things I like?
But to place trump next to Biden is a colossal feat of mental gymnastics that I am sure you do not truly believe. That guy is out for one and one only, himself. That’s it. And he will use every opportunity and lever to achieve this. There is a difference and it is quite large as well.

Well, it’s refreshing to see someone admit they are both shit(I know, I know, clearly one is more shit). It’s just a shame it takes so much pushing to get people to admit the obvious. Imagine if people could start out in conversations willing to admit this.

You’re right, it is a bit maddening that people are so scared to speak their minds. I’m glad you were able to speak your mind, prepare for downvotes.

Just so you know, it wasn’t so long ago that Biden was chanting his “marriage is between a man and a woman” bullshit, maybe he truly had a change of opinion, or maybe, just maybe, he is like all the other politicians that just try to read the room and pretend to be passionate about what will get votes.
