Then turning Ukraine into Russian territory is a bit counter productive no? That would literally bring NATO to Russias doorstep.

They want a buffer zone. Makes sense in terms of military strategy.

In countless military strategy documents from all times all around the world, including the pentagon?

It’s the imperial equivalent of “won’t somebody think of the children!?!?”. Every country that ever invaded a neighbor made some claim about needing a buffer zone. Hell, Israel is using it right now as an excuse to level almost a third of Gaza.

It can be true, of course, but it’s never a valid excuse for invading a peaceful neighbor. It’s certainly not something that Russia is entitled to, and the case that it even matters to them is paper thin.

With or without a buffer zone, if NATO invaded Russia it actually would be a three day operation, at least in terms of the conflict of armies. Occupation would be a disaster, but buffer zones do shit for that.

Russia’s buffer zone is their nuclear arsenal. Most of that is much further East, and nobody is deluded enough to think that could be taken out before being used.
