I think a lot of former redditors see the front page and expect it to act like reddit, when in reality, it will post the most active/popular threads throughout the fediverse, without weighting them against other communities. So on a given day you can have the whole front page be 196 posts, which is an extremely active queer/furry/leftist meme community from a queer instance.
How you overcome seeing too much of the same stuff, or seeing stuff you don’t want to see is by either following specific communities and making your subscriptions your default front page, or by blocking the users/communities/instances(on kbin) that you don’t want to see from. Lemmy/kbin is pretty customizable, but a lot of people use it unchanged out of the box and complain about what’s popular here.
