Looking for opinions, pro tips and thoughts!So my situation is as follows;

working as and Account Executive for a European SaaS company. Fully remote indefinite contract with all the benefits.

My main work revolves around having some online demos, calling clients mostly over teams, occasional phone call. And mostly admin. All clients are based in Europe.

My plan is to move to SEA +6hr time zone for me. How do you all deal with the time difference. Because my working hours would be from 2PM till 10PM in Asia ( 9 to 5 EU)

Any insights are. Wry welcome or any ideas! Thanks a bunch

    Speaking as an American who typically had a similar time difference when living in Europe: that’s really tough to maintain long term, unless the people you intend to socialize with are also typically going out around 10pm.

    Ultimately, having a social life meant that I needed to leave work around 2pm US time, but that’s flexibility I had as the business owner.

    Every situation is unique, maybe you’ll find a lifestyle that suits your schedule. But approach it as an experiment and give yourself permission to bail after a couple months if it’s not working out for you.

    I work kinda similar hours in Japan - sometimes I have meetings with US even later at night like 1-2 AM, other days I have 0 meetings and can work whatever time I want. maybe on average I work 12 PM - 7 PM or so. here it works totally fine because people start going out late and stay out late - even on a weekday there are lots of bars that open at 8 PM and close at “4 AM” (but will stay open later if people want). also I live in Central Tokyo, plenty of tourists and other international expats who have a late sleep schedule to hang out with. in SEA probably Bangkok would have the most similar vibe - I’ve definitely stumbled across random bars in neighborhoods like Thong Lor (expat central) at 12 AM and had fun drinking there until 2-3 or whatever.

    I work 3hrs time difference from Europe: it’s doable but anything more would be a huge annoyance.

    You literally can’t do anything social during the week. Now, if you don’t crave that, fine. But it can get lonely very fast, especially if you don’t know anyone.

    I had the exact same situation, American living in Europe (CET) for 6 years. It was fine most of the time, but became exhausting after a while. A few things I learned:

    • Set boundaries: can you ONLY do late night calls 3 days a week?
    • Don’t work mornings: my best times where when I’d go for a hike, do a long lunch with my wife, etc. during the typical work day, so I was fresh for my evening work time
    • Shift your sleep schedule (if you can). Nothing wrong with getting up at 10:00 if you don’t start work til 2.
    • Find a social circle that fits this: in SEA there’s probably loads of digital nomads and remote workers who are doing a similar thing. Connect with them and see how they’re managing.

    Either way, sounds like a fantastic experience and opportunity…definitely don’t be scared by the timezone difference. You’ll find a way to make it work.
