Very long time Halo fan here. Played the first game in 2001 when I was young, got Halo 2 right after launch, followed the entire series (books, graphics novels, official site info dumps) up until right after Halo 5. I did play Infinite, though, which I didn’t hate. Anyways, here’s mine.
Halo 5, when it turned out a fragment of Cortana survived. Making the entire sacrifice at the end of 4 to feel almost a waste of tears. Then she turns evil and is the new big threat. Kind of just went, “Welp. Wonder where tf they’ll go with this now.”
Not only made me feel ripped off from Halo 4, but 5 as well.
Then Infinite came out. Where is Cortana, you wonder???
Oh, she died. Yeah, for real this time. Off screen. Oh, but don’t worry, an echo or some bull crap tells you everything that happened, and you can see a reenactment of when she, I guess, made herself explode???
Kind of ruined three games worth of Story for me. Don’t get me wrong, each one has positive features of the stories, they just all feel entirely soured by the Supernatural-esqe die, live, die stuff.
Halo: CE started off as one of the best games of all-time, then the Flood were introduced and it started recycling whole levels and the game went into the toilet.
Failing to stick the landing is par for the course either this franchise. I enjoy Halo PvP and I enjoy fighting the Covenant but just about every game has something holding it back.
The flood was the whole reason the halo rings even existed, and the gravemind is one of my favorite antagonists of all time. And I did and still do consider the original Halo trilogy my favorite franchise.
Yeah, this was mine. I wasn’t a huge fan of Cortana becoming the new main villain at the end of 5, but hey I was ready for the ride to find out how it ended, I mean especially after such a cliffhanger ending. Then Infinite came out and basically completely ignores what the entire point of the 343 era was trying to instill. They tripped over themselves imo. I still haven’t finished Infinite’s campaign. I feel like they should have just rebooted the series or something. They clearly want that battle royale money but didn’t make a battle royale game. I guess if it were up to me I would’ve made Halo 6, just like the 5 before it, finish the story, wrap it all up in a nice neat bow and then made an open world follow up like Infinite.
I was REALLY hoping that, because of the technology in 4, they were going to save her by making her a living human in 5/6, but fuck me they literally tried something else entirely in 5 then completely abandoned it for 6.
H5 basically ruined that entire series for me, but I will say that I think Infinite was 343’s best attempt at a Halo game (although if it wasn’t for Gamepass I’d never have played it).

4 set up for cortana’s return if you pay close attention, it was just wasn’t great at all in execution, and then eternal nuked it all

Felt cheap

Made me look back at my halo 5 achievements. Started the campaign early 2016 and finished it in 2019
