What’s modern gaming convention that should no longer be practiced?

Correct me if I’m wrong… was it Fortnite? If not, they sure did popularize it. Most games I play have it now and due to my severe FOMO I grind to finish limited time events and battle passes. It’s starting to feel like a chore and unfun. Not to mention time consuming. I don’t wanna bother with them anymore.

I’m fairly sure it was Dota 2. Game released around 2013 and around 2015 or 2016, I think they came up with the battle pass which was shown as a way to support the pro scene directly and how every battle pass purchased would contribute to the prize pool for TI( The International which is the biggest tournament).

In the first year itself, the prize pool was a million dollars. Subsequent years have made it so the prize pool does not even need to be dependent on any kind of sponsors lol. In games like fortnite, halo, overwatch and apex the battle pass has become a funnel for more money into the game you’ve already paid for, for cosmetics and flexing, ultimately as in your case becoming more a chore rather than a fun gaming challenge.

One game I have seen this implemented correctly is Warframe with realistic time frames and easily achieved challenges and for unique skins and cosmetics, the designer is not only directly credited but also purchase would send a portion of money to them.

I’d say Halo did it mostly right as well. Battle Passes never expire and old ones can be purchased at any point, and the challenges are fairly easy to do depending on how sweaty your lobby is.

If a majority of rewards were worth earning I’d say they handled the idea perfectly, but with most of it being bloat content I can only give them credit for having the right idea.

I don’t see the problem with f2p games having them but it’s a bit of a joke when a full price game has buyable battle passes

It’s why I think Naraka is such a shame. When they did the free weekend when the game first released. I had a blast trying the game out.

The game was basically fortnite without guns and focused more on the bladed weapon combat. But the charged for the game as well has micro transactions on top of having battle pass.

So I didn’t get the game, despite playing a good 25+ hours over a 3 day free weekend.

They were too greedy with their push for profit and that speaks volume to me as a player.

Game is free now and I no longer have an interest in it anymore

Kind of sucks when a franchise that wasn’t previously f2p goes f2p and then introduces all these bullshit mechanics and are covered by the fact that it’s f2p now.

Halo too. Cool that it’s free to play now but it was a lot better when you paid a full price and got a full game. Now everything is sold a la carte for way more than a full price game and it ruins the fun of unlocking things.

Damn, I think the battle pass is a great way to keep money coming in to a game (as long as it’s free). I genuinely think the way Fortnite handles it is good. You get a bunch of cosmetics for playing and it’s like $8 for a season. I’m not sure if this is still true, but you can also earn enough currency for the next battle pass. Now, a game that you pay for? No fucking way.

F2P games with a battlepass system are totally fine. Especially when they give you ingame currency. Battlepass systems in a game that already costs 80-90$ is scummy though.
