lmao Marshall’s batteries was at Canterbury Rd there at Cooks River for years, and there were heaps of industrial places along the river.
I remember seeing trucks coming down to collect all the dead fish that were stinking the place out. Who knows what caused that.
The “Sugarworks” sounds so tame and nice. But it was sugarmills originally and they closed in 1854. What was it since then? It was used as a butter factory by Foley Bros and from 1900 until 1908 by Denham Bros as the Canterbury Bacon Factory. Huttons owned it from 1908-1982. It was a slaughterhouse up until 1950, then used for producing smallgoods. I suppose “Old Sugarmill” sounds a lot better than “Old Slaughterhouse” for apartments. (Interestingly, wikipedia and it’s source is incorrect on Huttons. I suspect a transposition error of 1980 instead of 1908)

Pollution of the river has been going on for a lot longer than that.
There’s shit in that river bed that is a lot worse than shit. And you could never get it out of the river bed.
Do NOT swim in it, and do NOT fish in it.
