I was looking for the Supermicro 24 bay 4u chassis recommended in the hardware wiki. But I’m not seeing any affordable options on ebay so now I’m thinking to go with the 36 bay chassis and only use the front 24 bays. This also means the motherboard/cpu section of the chassis will be 2u.
What HBA would be good with this case and truenas?
What should I use for the motherboard/CPU/RAM? I have a few cheap ryzen desktop boards that work with ECC RAM, but thinking to buy something that might be more reliable.
How are you planning to setup the drives? Most zfs articles I have read say not to go past 12 drives in a single vdev. Are you going to do two vdevs of 12 drives raidz2 or something else?
I have been browsing the truenas forums a bit as I work on my build. The Ryzen were never officially meant to be used with ECC but it works. If you go with Intel core processors you will need a w680 chipset for official ECC support. Most people in the forums with your kind of setup seem to recommend a XEON E-2xxx processor of some kind that is used. You can pair that with ddr4 ECC memory which is easier to come by these days.
I’ve nearly got all my hardware for my build and am just waiting on whether to pull the trigger on some Seagate Exos 20TB drives.
I use gen 1 Ryzen with multi-bit ECC ram from China Newegg seller on cheap 2nd gen ryzen ASRock motherboard and never had any issues but might have got lucky. I use 9 drives per vdev and use zraid3 cause I’m paranoid and combine 2vdevs in one pool, it can take a day to scrub or resilver but it’s not too bad.
Haven’t decided yet might do 3 vdevs with raidz2.
I have some asrock boards I tested with ECC and a 1st gen Ryzen and they work but might go with a server mobo/cpu if I can find something affordable and energy efficient. Only using this for storage so don’t need multi socket or powerful cpu.
