I got into emulators when NESticle was hot shit and looking through some archives of roms found some oddball Mario games. “Oh neat, Japanese exclusive games?” Happened before with like 3 final fantasys so why not? Nope. Shitty hacks. But interesting to try for a couple of minutes and delete.
I’m sure actual Chinese gamers are actually nostalgic for these shitty bootlegs. They seem to ship em with every Famicom-on-a-chip and emulator device.
Tbf now there are some pretty good romhacks out there. One of my favorites I’ve been playing is a fire red hack that makes everything Dragonball Z themed. Gotta collect the dragon balls, and you catch and battle Z warriors with Capsule Corp capsules instead of pokemon/pokeballs.

Oh yeah, quite a lot. There’s a few Zelda and Metroid ones that basically make a whole new game out of it.
