Our vultures ponder decentralization over convenience
Honestly, I don’t care as long as they are stay away from fediverse
In my opinion, yes.
A related problem is the possibility Meta or other bad actors (e.g. Musk) invade the fediverse and destroy it, while they brainstorm ways to stay in business, but I’m more happy than bothered about their current businesses destroying themselves.
I’m happy personally, I think social media should go away completely
Now, saying “cars should go away” while sitting in a car makes sense to me, as many of us live in places where public transportation is not reliable nor is not universally accessible.
But this… This is an interesting take to stumble across on social media…
To be fair, federated social media is a very different “beast”. I wouldn’t say that I want all social media to go away myself, but I think the idea of monopolistic ad-driven social media (what I now call corporate social media) is harmful to society, doesn’t scale well to the larger world and importantly doesn’t condone meaningful discussion. In that regard, I could say that I don’t want corporate social media or at least want that experience to be partly sandboxed.
That’s totally fair. That sort of nuance wasn’t there in what I replied to, though perhaps it was behind the comment. But I’ve also just seen many, many people over the years who think “social media” is whatever social platforms they don’t use, and the ones they do are “something else”.
I use social media because I’m wasting time and this is an easy thing to pick up and look at. If it wasn’t there I’d hate it for a while but eventually we’d all look at something else. I’d hope it’d be something healthier.
i love that the popular platforms are challenged, which could lead into better condition for users. but thing that doesn’t make me happy is they’re big company, the big one so nothing really changing on the background.
