@whoopThereItIs Less than what I expected, yeah, But one cool thing, though, is that this is the first time I find out about NBA breaking news through Lemmy (and also while following and commenting on this magazine, or whatever it’s called, from my Mastodon account).

This is actually huge because he will automatically not be eligible for MVP and All-NBA awards.

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement that goes into effect July 1, a player must appear in 65 games (with limited exceptions) to be eligible for awards

…That’s it? Might as well have announced it during the Finals, this is a nothing burger. DeAndre Ayton got suspended 25 games for failing a drug test. Ja has flashed a gun twice and got the same amount of games suspended.

The first suspension was 8 games so the repeat offense being 3x the penalty seems reasonable. Another poster mentioned that it also makes him ineligible for a lot of end of year awards. I Silver mentioning that they found additional information had everyone thinking the new stuff was worse and worth a bigger suspension.

It’s almost 1/3 of the games. “Conduct detrimental to the league” is a bit less set in stone than failing a drug test or something. I don’t know what people expected, there is a player’s union that the NBA has to think about. They don’t want the union disputing their decision and turning it into more of a circus. Not sure what people were expecting.

I agree. Missing 25 games as a professional player while your team either gels or struggles without you would be extremely difficult. If this isn’t a wakeup call then 35 or 45 games wouldn’t be either.

Did think it was pretty light, but given that it takes him out of a number awards it makes sense

And I’m sure he’s on a much shorter leash in the event he doesn’t learn from his mistake

The media really got us hyped up with Silver’s comments. I think if he didn’t make that statement during the finals, then this would seem like a decent suspension. Everybody kind of went wild with the speculation about the Pacers “laser pointer” incident, etc. I hope they release the details about the plan he has to follow to be reinstated.

Would have thought he’d get more than 25 games but this is still a big blow for the Grizzlies.
