In 1983, in Southern California, I was in my third year of high school, a wanna-be punker, and I met my first girlfriend. She was a “NewRo”, a fan of the New Romantic scene (which had come over from England). She mostly listened to Duran Duran, Culture Club and Human League. But she introduced me to Siouxsie and The Cure and a few other better bands that I still like a lot.

Susanne, if you’re out there… I still want my Wide Boy Awake record back.

      That’s a wonderful anecdote.

I hope Susanne still plays that record and recalls the good times you had together.

Siouxsie is such a strange phenomenon. Nobody I know has ever heard of her, and I think I only heard her on the radio once growing up. But whenever I look up a band or artist on Wikipedia she’s listed as an inspiration. Just monolithic across the industry yet I feel like I’m the only normal person who knows she exists.
