These old coins that aren’t quite round may have been filed down to skim off some of the metal, which could be melted down and cast as a new copy counterfeit coin.

This was known to the Romans and they took early steps to remedy this. Look up serrated denarii. Not all of them were produced like that, but it was an early attempt at anti-counterfeiting that worked rather well, but was unfortunately extremely labor-intensive.
