It’s rare for me to look at something and confidently say it looks soulless, but that’s the sad truth of the image.
If they were all anime girls, would you feel differently?
Oh I’m sorry, it’s clearly the fact that this doesn’t have onemonepeas and exaggerated expressions that this image lacks emotion. It’s not like 3d modelers have any way to make something look like it’s genuinely having fun shooting people in the middle of what’s supposed to be a park (complete with innocent bystanders in the cross-fire) without resorting to hand-drawn content.
Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down. It just so happens the most popular SocialVR platform is absolutely dominated by anime.
I’ve heard people using anime avatars talk about styles from all sorts of platforms not being appealing. It’s more of a joke about the anime bias the metaverse has.
Ah, that’s fair. Not the kind of person to use meta, so most of my comments on it are rather third person.
Why yes of course what a stupid question

TL;DR: in v57, explore is called “horizon feed”. There’s already a nearly identical profile UI, same avatar, username, now unified chat, and soon a “Worlds” tab in the library (visible next to augments).
For the future:
The biggest step Meta could take would be to deprecate Horizon Home, Quest’s mostly featureless home environment. […] Meta could have Horizon Worlds running when no other immersive app is instead of Horizon Home. You’d be in your Horizon Worlds home as soon as you leave passthrough.
this sounds like actual hell, no thank you :)
Do cis people also get dysphoria from those avatars?
I (enby) get such a visceral “no fucking way I’d ever want to look like that” involuntary reaction to all of the Horizon avatars. If they forced me to make an avatar or started showing avatars in the Home menu I’d abandon my Quest completely. Wondering if it’s just a gender dysphoria thing, or if they are that repulsive for everyone.
I don’t identify with any of the avatars shown in that image, but I don’t think the horizon avatars are terribly bad in general. Not sure how you managed to get past the avatar creation if you’re using a Quest, some environments have a mirror and the profile tab in the app/headset shows them as well. There’s an okay amount of customization; not knowing you, I’d assume you can probably get something that you’d find acceptable. But maybe not.
They’re definitely an improvement over the previous ones. I like them certainly more than Roblox or rec room, but that doesn’t change anything about horizon worlds being unattractive.
Thanks for the answer. It’s interesting that it could just be a me thing. I’m not terribly picky about my appearance IRL, but in VR having an avatar I can identify with suddenly becomes very important.

I made a head-avatar years ago when they were first released (probably the 2019-era ones in your link). I don’t like it, but it doesn’t invoke as much of a reaction in me as the upper-body/full-body avatars I’ve seen in Horizon ads/videos.
TBH I don’t use my Quest 1 much, and when I do it’s only for PC Link. It’s possible it’s got an update pending that will force new social features next time I start it up.
Ah, maybe Quest 1 is the answer, I think it’s no longer getting updates. But whenever/if you end up with these avatars, I’d suggest you try them out and see if you can find a customization you like.
