How large is the Unification Church? I thought they were a pretty big organization.

    Also, this paragraph is hilarious:

The Unification Church, meanwhile, has claimed that engaging in activities that violate Japan’s civil law should not be considered grounds for ordering its dissolution and that the government’s questioning of the group is illegal.

“Just because we broke the law doesn’t mean you’re allowed to question us!”

Good(?) to know that borderline cults are just as entitled no matter what part of the world they’re in.

What a wild journey to get here from Abe Shinzo’s assasination just over 15 months ago. It must feel absolutely surreal to be Yamagami Tetsuya, sitting in a jail cell and receiving the news that he actually somehow managed to take down the Unification Church.

be deprived of tax benefits, although it could still operate as an entity in Japan.

Religions fleece people who are too stupid to differentiate between reality and fairy tales. These are probably the same people who keep voting for politicians and parties that allow tax benefits for religions.

All it took was the public murder of the grandson of a war criminal who was trained in politics by that same war criminal.

Abe had less to answer for than his grandfather. There were Nazi leaders with less to answer for than Kishi Nobusuke, so Abe was obviously less of a bastard.

The Moonies, or Unification church, on the other hand… Can you be counted as a State Sponsor of Terrorism if you’re not actually a State?

Anyway. Fun fact; the Moonies were actually involved in Iran-Contra on the Contra side of things, and were actually the people the CIA funneled money through to the Contra when Congress explicitly cut Reagan’s funding for them.

The Moonies had been funding right-wing death squads all over South and Central America. In the early days, those squads were led by literal Nazis that the Moonies and another asshole named Chiang Kai-shek had smuggled out of Europe after WW2. Kishi also played a part in the World Anti-Communist League with Chiang Kai-shek and Reverend Moon.

I’m a bit torn, I’m not a fan of murder.

I don’t really care for it, even if the guy being murdered makes the world a better place by being dead… On the other hand, Abe being dead is making the world a better place.
